American Idol 2009: Barry Manilow Does Bootcamp!

After 100,000 auditions, American Idol rolls into Hollywood with the 147 hopefuls who received their Golden Ticket from the last round bidding to impress the judges for the second time, hoping for a place in the Top 36 – and Simon Cowell is left stunned by a rant by one unlucky contestant.
This year sees Idol’s first-ever Boot Camp – with the first celebrity mentor of the series Barry Manilow, guiding them through the process.
Dennis Brigham, 19, turns up to sing “For Once in My Life,” which doesn’t go down too well with the judges, with Simon telling him: “I don’t think anyone is going to take you seriously as a recording artist” after his camp audition. After he is given a resounding ‘no’, Dennis is shocked that he has been cut. He tells the judges they ‘suck’ and makes a number of comments about Simon’s wardrobe, telling him “you need to get some wardrobe. For somebody to be so rich, your pants are very, very cheap, with that cheap, very lame shirt you’ve got on.” Before he departs, he adds America will be “mad” that he didn’t get through. Cowell responds by saying he had just “reinforced his decision a million times over.”
‘Bikini Girl’ Katrina Darrell, 20, returns – this time with clothes – though she makes a play for host Ryan Seacrest once again, once again giving him a passionate KISS. She also flirts with Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson and once again has a stand-off with Kara DioGuardi. Despite leaving Kara and Paula unimpressed, she makes it through to the second day of the Hollywood Round, leaving DioGuardi fuming once again. DioGuardi tells her “leave your number in the back room” before telling her “bring your pole tomorrow.”
Simon also reserves his most barbed comment to Von Smith. After his audition containing facial tics and a poor vocal performance, Simon tells him “I thought it was indulgent nonsense what you did there, Von. Really horrible. Really annoying…it’s like what a child would do.”
There are also appearances from David Osmond and Lil Rounds, who was one of the stand-out performances from the auditions – with both successful and making it through to the second day, where the judges have whittled the number down to 104.
Watch the show tonight ITV2 at 8pm.
