American Idol 2010: Lee Dewyze’s uncle murdered his Grandma

Lee Dewyze is one of our favourite American Idol contestants this year.but it turns out that the mild mannered rocker has had some huge trials in his personal life.

We had previously wondered why we know so little about Lee’s background, all we have been told is that he is a former paint salesman. But maybe Lee didn’t want the press uncovering the fact that his beloved Grandmother was murdered by her own son.

Star Magazine has reported that 80 year old Eileen was killed on October 27, 2004, by her son who was suffering from a mental breakdown. After pleading insanity, John DeWyze was committed to the Elgin Mental Health Center for up to 60 years in April 2007.

Still, we are a little shocked that some opportunistic Idol producer hasn’t at least tried to use this for some sympathy votes. Surely this story is worth a few thousand at least.

I think it is great that Lee is doing so well on American Idol on his own talent and not exploiting his family’s personal tragedy. You are doing a great job Lee and I am happy Idol has respected this private part of your life up to this point! I hope you and your family have found peace. Love your music!

I think this is really SICK that STAR Magazine has dug up this story!!! I’m sure Lee didn’t want this family tragedy to be dredged up either! This is a very personal story and doesn’t need to be discussed let alone used to garner “votes.”

Lee has a beautiful voice and he’s a very talented songwriter — he does not need any sympathy to win this competition!

Murder in the family is not exactly “heart-warming” or anything other than “shudder-inducing.”
WTH would Lee want this story out?

Stories like Lee’s are TRAGIC & best left OUT of the background story. Lee seems to be a fine young artist & with a little bit of counseling about his stage presence can be very successful. NOT everyone wants to MILK a sad story to get votes … plus it doesn’t always work. Perhaps Lee will be a successful RECORDING artist. Not everyone was born to be a STAR!!

Tragic thing do things to people and they seem to look at life in a whole different way.Music is a GREAT WAY ALL BEST LEE!!! P.S COULD YOU COME TO CANADA AND PERFORM FOR U.2

I agree, Lee probably would not want this story out to the public. And I personally, don’t think he would use this as a sympathy story to gain votes. He won with his natural, raw talent just like all the other American Idols have in the past. He is a great singer and performer, and I see big things for him in the future. He is wonderful, and gorgeous, not to mention. :) Your fans love you no matter what, Lee!

That would explain why, at his homecoming miniconcert he said: “I have to say hello to my Grandma. I know she’s out here. Where are you?” and then pointing somewhere in the crowd said, “There you are. I love you.”

I couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t was with the family. Now it makes sense. And makes the whole concert that much more touching.

    If you’re a fan, you’ve got to watch it. It’s in 6 parts and very well-produced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXRnwz4nS_E&feature=related
