American Idol 2010: Simon Cowell says Katie Stevens ‘sucked the energy out of ‘Breakaway’ (VIDEO)
We are starting to think that Katie Stevens has only got to where she is on American Idol, because of her ill grandmother and not because of her singing voice. On each of her live performances so far we feel that there has been something missing and if she doesn’t improve very soon, we don’t see her making the final 12.
On last night’s American Idol Katie performed the Kelly Clarkson track ‘Breakaway’. Just like Paige Miles struggled with her Clarkson track last week, Katie seemingly found it difficult to bring the energy to the song that it needed. In the end she made a pumping anthem sound like a boring dirge.
Judges Comments:
Randy Jackson: ‘This is one of my favourite songs ever written’ but added that Katie’s version “paled in comparison… it was almost like karaoke”.
Ellen DeGeneres: Loved that Katie listened to the judges’ comments, last week Randy told her to sing a bigger song and Ellen told her to go younger. However she didn’t think Katie really felt the words in the song and said that it lacked personality.
Kara DioGuardi: “The singing needed to be perfect tonight to stand out–and it wasn’t, sweetie.”
Simon Cowell: “You sucked the energy out of the second half of the song”, but he also gave her “ten out of ten for trying” and listening to the judges advice.
