American Idol: Cat Deeley Creepy?

Just a note, but does anyone else find Cat Deeley a bit creepy on American Idol?

I find myself cringing every time I watch her interview a contestant. She comes across as pretty awkward and the interviews are uncomfortable.

What I’m trying to say is that she might not be a frontrunner for the next series of X Factor. There’s got to be better presenters out there. And why are they using a British presenter specifically for British TV?

Cat Deeley? On American Idol? Ummm think you have the wrong show …. Ryan Seacrest is the host of AI. I googled Cat and found this reference in wiki about here - guess that explains why you in the UK see her associated with AI:

“In 2007, Deeley appeared before and after advertisement breaks during coverage of the early stages of American Idol season 6 on the UK television channels ITV and ITV2.”

I did see her when she hosted So You Think You Can Dance in the UK and found her to be an awkward presenter when it came to speaking with the contestants. Not sure if that’s what you meant by creepy, but I think I understand.

  2. Tabby Katt says:

Ryan Seacrest presents it, but Cat does all the UK links before and after the break. She also interviews the finalists and is accompanied by a ‘celebrity’(?) judge.

  3. Maiden says:

Cat Deeley - totally agree that her hosting(?) style is uncomfortable viewing- contrived and desperate.

  4. Brad Mullet says:

@Lesley: Um, I didn’t say she was hosting American Idol at all! She does seem to be doing some backstage presenting for our ITV2 shows over in the UK though.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Cat Deeley and I’ve been watching her career for years in shows like CD:UK, where she was much more natural. On American Idol, she’s uncomfortable for some reason.

  5. Maureen says:

I find CAT DEELEY very friendly very bubbly and a lovely presenter. She is also very down to earth, she would be a great shoulder for contestants to lean on when they were feeling down.

I have also watched CAT DEELEY live and she is truly wonderful, nobody can do it any better. Nice to have someone who looks smart and has brains do some presenting instead of someone without.

Oh she’s awful to watch on American Idol - she’s ruined the whole show for me which is why I dont watch it anymore.

  7. Dan says:

WHAT have you done ITV2? I have been watching Idol since season 2 and really enjoy it, but this year they are just dragging the whole show out!
So… We want to hear the contestants sing… We want to hear what the judges say and we might even wanna see the contestants talking about where they come from and cry because they love their mother, but please NO MORE Cat Deeley. The interviews are getting longer (and more cringworthy) and I really don’t care what Cat, Lulu or anyone else things of Stephanie Edwards or anyone else.

ITV2 and Freemantle… Please end the misery that is Cat and let Ryan get on with it like he’s done for the past 6 years. OK….I’ve finished my rant.

  8. Myra says:

Cat Deeley is annoying on American Idol, pretending to host the show. AI is the number one show in America because it’s perfect the way it is. Cat Deeley ruins the show by doing pointless interviews with silly questions like, ‘have you ever been to London?’. WHO CARES? Ryan already does the interviews so she doesn’t need to do them again. I want to see them sing. Get her off the show!

Since ITV has been forcing her on us, I’ve been recording the show on VCR and watch it later, so I can skip Deeley’s useless segments. It’s been great!

  9. Annie says:

Alongside that Amercian drawl, Cat’s screechy voice is unbearable and I can;t understand what she actually does?

Ryan - give her some help -please!

  10. Maiden says:

    I rest my case

  11. Toby says:

Agreed - Cat Deely is appalling.

  12. Nic says:

My wife and I would just like to add that we too can’t see what Cat is doing on American Idol. As previous said her interviews make you cringe and her quick interludes where all she says is “back to the main stage” are workthless. I can’t but think shes being lined up for some other role is the US.
PS. She is a lovely lass, we just can’t understand what she is doing on AI.

  13. Brad Mullet says:

I agree, she needs a better vehicle than a second rate spot on American Idol.

  14. sandra bartlett says:

Cat Deeley is just embarassing the English on American Idol….she is so pointless…every week she sits on the sofa in a short skirt with her legs hanging out and talks total garbage!!!!!! and she has the biggest hands I ever saw in my life!!!!

  15. Rick James says:

why are u guys slanging off cat???? she is a really nice person N presenter.

lol, you guys have nothing better then to slang off people…. how sad is that???? 1 word…. nerds

    Cat all the way

  16. Matty says:

I agree with the majority here, Cat is completely pointless and annoying… Her segments here on the UK version interrupt the show and are annoying to say the least - I would like to hear what Ryan is asking the contestants and not have to listen to her babbling onto some second rate guests about the weather. Why on earth have they decided to do this? It completely ruins the show… >:(

  17. Annie says:

I quite agree: please axe Cat Deeley. This is not a personal attack - i do love her smiles and i consider her a good ambassador for the UK BUT She has messed up the show and I really do not see the need for her interruptions. The show does not flow anymore and i feel there is so much that is cut out to allow her air time. I miss the bits where we learn more about the singers etc etc. Can we just watch the show the way it used to be? PUH-LEASE?

  18. Eric says:

Deeley is awful. I can’t stand watching her. She is ruining this series of Idol. Smug, useless, pathetic and a watse of time. Give us more Ryan.

  19. sally says:

Cat Deeley is awful. She tries to be everyone’s friend and then persists in asking how they felt when they were voted off. Her interview with Tony Bennett was cringeworthy and embarrassing. He didnt know what the hell she was on about. She was okay on Stars in their Eyes and Live and Kicking but really suited to hosting the quiz shows on Challenge TV or whatever in the early hours of the morning’

  20. Derah says:

Well, hate to disagree with you all but I can’t stand smug Ryan and am very happy that some of his drivel is being replaced by Cat. I think that she’s only talking over the bit where they’re giving out the phone number to vote anyway, so she’s doing us a favour by sparing us this useless information. I like to see a British face in the show, makes it feel more familiar. AI has only improved for me since Cat came along.

  21. Sheena says:

OMG, what’s going on with Cats uplifting eyebrow.

  22. Derah says:

Yup, I’m right. I watched AI in Israel on Wednesday without our friend Cat, and am watching the same episode now here in the UK, and the only bits of the original show that are being cut out and replaced by Cat are when they give out the phone numbers. So even if you don’t like Cat, you’re not missing anything else interesting folks!

  23. Kate says:

She’s so patronising and condascending, and has clearly “americanised” herself in order to fit in across the water. She clearly hasn’t realised her audience for American Idol is British …

  24. Andy says:

Cat Deeley has ruined Americal Idol. She is sychophantic to the point of embarrassment. Have you noticed that she never really asks a question anyway, just makes some comments that the ‘interviewee’ struggles to pick up on. She is so busy trying to be everyone’s ‘girlfriend’ that it’s like listening to inane chat on the back of a bus. More importantly, I find her completely lacking in any genuine emotion (which was grotesquely plain to see in the America Gives Back show) when she seemed too smug for her own good. When she gave her ‘give a man a fish and he’ll be fed for a day…’ story - as if she’d just thought of it - I wanted to throw something at the TV screen.
With her skirts getting shorter by the week, and her sucking-up style, she has set female TV presenting back twenty years.

  25. Nan says:

Maybe it’s because I’m viewing it from the perspective of an American watching it on UK TV, but I think Cat is a great asset. Ryan Secreast’s “interviews” with the contestants are so contrived and cheesy. Cat’s are unguarded and fun, and she doesn’t take it all soooo seriously. Ryan is fake, plastic, and self-important. She’s refreshing, and a terrific addition.

  26. Idol Atry says:

I’m a Brit and I have never missed an episode of AI but now I have to press mute each time Cat appears. She is SO SO SO wrong for this spot. Her accent has gone haywire - the rising americanised inflection at the end of each sentence is so nauseous, I can’t watch. I hope the producers read this blog - they got it so wrong hiring Cat for this. She belongs on kids TV - period - big cheesey smile, flash of thigh, toss of hair, raise of one eyebrow…. Nice, beautiful, girl but just not for this and probably not as ’sweet, cutie’ as she makes out. Too much sugar by far. Did you notice the body language of Annie Lennox? Andy said Sychophantic..Capital S. Send her home to Brum.

  27. Kate says:

Cat is horrendous on American Idol - she typifies the dumming down of TV. Why do we need someone to tell us what has just happened? And why do we need her to share her ‘wisdom’ on whether the judges are right or not. I have to press mute when she is on. I used to quite like her, but can she not see how completely sycophantic she is being?

  28. mark hollinsworth says:

Cat DFeeley is as false as someone could be..she is a distant relation to Wallace and gromit the way she keeps sticking her tongue out…Always forgets to wear the skirt to the tops she calls a dress and is wasteful on american tv and she does not do Britain proud at all…get her off the tv…ppplllease

  29. Gaby says:

Totally agree with all comments about Cat Deeley on American Idol. I think I would rather watch Ryan give out the telephone numbers than watch her tomfoolery on that couch, arms and legs everywhere. She belongs on childrens programs. And did we really need to hear Rachel Hunters comments, who cares.

  30. Pat Robins says:

This is Cat Deeley at work invited to USA by Fox. Don’t blame the employee!

    Cat Deeley
    Host

Cat Deeley is one of the foremost television presenters in the UK. Deeley is a double BAFTA Award winner and has won many awards for her work on some of the UK’s hottest primetime shows, including “Stars in Their Eyes,” “CD:UK Live” (on which she appeared weekly for six years), “SMTV: Live” (which she hosted for three years), “Comic Relief Does Fame Academy,” the “V Festival” (2004, 2005), “The Brits,” “Record of the Year,” “Elton John Live from New York,” “The Latin Grammy Awards” and a one-hour special with U2, “When Cat Met U2,” for ITV. Deeley has also become one of the hottest new faces on U.S. TV following her first hugely successful season hosting SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Since then, Deeley became Jay Leno’s first regular Entertainment Correspondent on “The Tonight Show,” and she is now performing the same duty for “Good Morning America” as well. She also presented FOX’s live New Year’s Eve coverage from Times Square.

Deeley’s many interview subjects over the years include such luminaries as Madonna, Mariah Carey, U2, Prince, Marilyn Manson, Elton John, Joss Stone, Tom Jones and 50 Cent. She hosted a weekly radio show, “Cat and Edith’s Hit Music Sunday,” on London’s premier radio station, and has made appearances on the television comedies “Happiness” and “Little Britain.”

  31. Pat Robins says:

Then there’s this ’snippet’ (sheesh) English usage, not American censorship, of previously submitted perfectly aceptable language -

    Cowell keeping the girl busy…

  32. Indie says:

I like Cat Deeley and think Americans are just pompous. She has a personality and brings a bubbly quality to the overall atmosphere. She is built awkward though like a newborn foal.

  33. Indie says:

TV beauty Cat Deeley has slammed American telly - for being too perfect.

The British presenter, who has made it big in the US, said: “It all looks a bit Stepford over here.

“It’s very professional, but it’s as though the personality has been taken away from it.

“Everything is so perfect. I don’t host a show and go, ‘Have you got my best angle?’ ”

Cat, 31, who presents So You Think You Can Dance, recalls few comments on her looks during her 10 years on UK TV.

She said: “But here, kids say, ‘Oh, she should get her nose straightened.’ ”

    from mirror.co.uk

I completely agree with her. We’re so used to seeing perfect white teeth, perfect tans and cardboard personalities on American tv that we don’t appreciate a real person when we see one.

    Go Kat!!!!

    No, I’m not British!
