American Idol’s Adam Lambert ready to rock UK and is named as Billboard’s sexiest man in music.
Former American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, is planning to make the leap across the pond and once again make a crack at the UK music market.
Lambert, who came second to Kris Allen in the 2009 series of the competition, is well-known in the States for flamboyant style and wide-ranging vocals, and hopes that by bringing his talent over here he will become as successful with the British public.
Talent show winners and runner ups are notorious for not making it big anywhere other than where they competed, with Leona Lewis and One Direction being the obvious exceptions. Most American talent show stars fall flat in Britain, however Adam did enjoy some success when he came to England to promote his first album in 2010.
He is hoping to build on that success with the UK release of his second album, titled Trespassing!
The album rocketed to the top of the US charts after its release last month and the American media went slightly OTT promoting Lambert as the first openly gay artist to top the charts.
“The media’s more obsessed with it than most people,” Lambert told BBC News.
“I understand why it is a very sensitive topic – the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community is in the middle of essentially a civil-rights movement.
“I consider it a privilege to be as visible as I am because I’m not necessarily the example of what a gay person is, but I am an example of being comfortable with it and not letting it get in the way.
“One of the great things about that milestone is now there is someone who is commercially viable that’s open about [being gay]. It creates hope and proves a point to all the haters that say it’s not possible, but it does seem to be a hang up for a lot of consumers.”
Whilst many of us Brits wont have heard of Lambert, thanks to American Idol he does already have a solid fan base here in the UK, known as Glamberts, and the singer is hoping that the UK release of Trespassing will gain him a much bigger British following.
This may be helped by the fact that Billboard just named the American Idol runner-up as the sexiest man in music after receiving 26% of the reader vote in front of Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine in second place with 12%.
Justin Bieber came third after scoring 10%, ahead of Enrique Iglesias with 9.75%. Chris Brown, Usher and Drake also made an appearance in the top five, earning 5% or less of the vote each.
The title of sexiest female went to X Factor USA judge, Britney Spears who received 45% of the vote, beating the likes of Lady GaGa with 12% and Beyoncé, who achieved 8%., with former American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift also featuring in the top ten.
Speaking of his influence on this album, of which he co-wrote most of the tracks, Lambert went on to say: ”I’ve grown up a lot in the past couple of years,” .
“This whole lifestyle: Idol, having my first album and touring – it forces you to face certain things and it definitely caused me to mature.
“After my tour I had time to stay at home, be with my boyfriend and hang out with friends and that brought me down to earth and helped me write music from a more relaxed place.”
Before competing on the hit American talent show Lambert had been employed on a cruise ship, where he learnt “very specific things I didn’t learn on other jobs”.
“Like learning how to perform for a geriatric audience that’s falling asleep but it can also feel like the most lovely holiday at your grandparents house.”
Following that the singer then spent 6 years being cast as the understudy in high-class musicals, feeling constantly rejected and discouraged until the opportunity to take part on the show came along.
“It all comes down to money and it costs a lot to put an artist’s first album out – record companies are not going to take a gamble if there’s not a sure return,” he says.
“I weighed the pros and cons and figured I should audition because this show could help me break through – and it did. I think it is possible to break the stigma, but it takes a little extra work.”
Since American Idol, Lambert has collaborated several times with British legendary rock group Queen, after they appeared in the final of the show to sing with Lambert and that years winner, Kris Allen. The group was so impressed with Lambert that they have invited him to join them on tour with them this summer.
“I’m up there with the people who wrote these songs and I’m their guest so I intend to treat this opportunity with respect and dignity,” he says. “I don’t want to let anybody down, but it’s also important for me not to mimic and a bad impression of Freddie Mercury would be really tacky.
“It’s a balancing act – interpreting it for my own voice, but not straying too far from the original and not copying it.” Lambert said.
However, when asked if he would consider fronting the band should he be asked, Lambert said he would not, commenting:”I have my own songs and album I believe in and my own path to chart,” he says.
“And I think they know that so I don’t think they would ask me anyway.”

I’ve seen him perform live. He’s amazing.
Adam’s got the “it” factor. Magnetic personality and vocals. Can’t resist him, and better still, we’ve all just seen the tip.
