Kelly Clarkson has been named as American Idol’s most successful contestant to date.

Carrie Underwood, winner of Idol season 4 may have sold more albums than first ever winner Kelly Clarkson, but Billboard.com have shunted her into second place.

The site report that Kelly has sold 10.6 million albums, 15.9 million tracks and achieved 4.2 million radio plays, while Carrie has shifted 11.5 million albums, 13.9 million singles and enjoyed 2.4 million radio plays since she won Idol in 2005.

In third place is Chris Daughtry, who didn’t even win his season in 2006. The rock singer fronts his own band, Daughtry and has sold 5.7 million albums.
