The drafting of new judges, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, has not had the desired effect on American Idol ratings, despite them bickering and threatening to kill one another.
Superstars Minaj and Carey were brought in as replacement judges for Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler and US singing and acting Latino sensation Jenifer Lopez when they quit the show at the end of the last series.
Since the show began its audition process both Minaj and Carey have featured heavily in the headlines after they fell out spectacularly during an October audition.
The pair, who are two of the biggest names in US pop history, began hurling insults at each other to the point where Minaj allegedly threatened to shoot Mariah.
Mariah then revealed that she had hired more security fearing that Minaj mean to carry out her threats, saying that she had two small children to consider (obviously they aren’t as important as the American Idol wages she is due to receive as otherwise she would have just quit) and now that the show is back on US TV screens, the war has continued.
However, the new judges, or their differences – which many believe are all a publicity stunt to get more viewers, have not helped the ratings of the show at all.
American Idol, which premiered on Fox Television on Wednesday night, saw figures slump by 19% to 17.9million viewers, making it the shows lowest season opener to date.
Not only that, but the 2 hour show also lost 19% of its most coveted by advertisers age group, 18-49-year-olds.
Total viewers dropped to 17.9 million from 21.9 million in 2012.
However, despite this drop, American Idol remained the most watched show in US Television on Wednesday night, by quite a large margin, beating all other shows combined in the 18-49 demographic on the three other biggest TV networks.
It also beat last year’s NBC rival show, The Voice’s season premier by 46% in total viewers.
American Idol has always been Fox’s golden show, having been crowned most watched show on US TV eight years in a row, until it was beaten by Sunday Night Football last year.
