The Voice 2011: Adam Levine refuses to apologise for Adam Lambert comments

Adam Levine caused a bit of an uproar last night, when he inadvertently managed to upset Adam Lambert fans the world over.

The Maroon 5 frontman was critiquing a performance by Cee-Lo Green’s team member Nakia on NBC’s The Voice and seemed to diss the former American Idol star and his Grammy nominated single Whataya Want From Me.

Nakia sang the track on the live show and after the rendition, Levine mused:

“I’m actually not familiar with that song …..but you just forced me to like it!”

To add insult to injury, he added:

“I’m pretty sure that, although I haven’t heard that song before, you probably sang it better than the person that sang it originally.”

Lambert enthusiasts were bombarding Adam’s Twitter within seconds but despite the attack, he refused to apologise and responded on the social networking site saying:

“I had honestly never heard that song before. I thought that @nakia made me like a song that would have otherwise fallen flat. I’m NOT sorry.”

The Voice contestant Nakia also jumped to his defense and asked fans not to be mad with the star. He pleaded:

“Before I go to bed: Fans, pls don’t hate on @adamlevine for his comments about WWFM. He’s a great guy & wasn’t trying sabotage anything. xo”

Even Adam Lambert tried to calm things down and assured his fans that he was NOT upset by the remarks. He said:

“But for the record, Im def a Maroon 5 fan. Fans: there is NO reason to be angry. Thanks for being protective but it’s all good. :)

Watch Nakia’s performance below and let us know, do you think it’s better than Adam’s?

Adam Levine is a self absorbed idiot. Always has been. I can’t believe Adam Lambert fans gave Levine a second thought. Levine has never been know for his intelligence.

  2. dian says:

Levine is such an idiot. Grammy-nominated song, and he thought it was “fallen flat”??

    Lambert’s version is better, definitely.

  3. Katherine says:

He seems to be out of touch with pop music even though he’s a judge on a music-show.. Yeah it’s possible he hasn’t heard the song (still weird though) but to say it was better than the original when he hasn’t even heard the original? that’s stupid

  4. MaryL says:

Adam Levine showed his ignorance last night. A judge on The Voice should know top 40 songs. His band should be called Moron 5!

  5. Shirlee says:

Adam Lambert’s version(s) are better than Nakia’s but Nakia did a good job. I even voted for Nakia last evening even though he couldn’t even get his phone number listed correctly. As for Adam Levine, he has lost all credibility as a judge of music. For those of you reading this who are not an Adam Lambert fan, if you follow this whole fiasco from start to finish you will readily understand why Lambert’s fans are so loyal. We are supporting a gentleman who is intelligent, talented, handsome, sexy, and on his way to becoming a world famous superstar?

Levine said Nakia sang it better than the original, which Ceelo announced was Lambert, did he not hear that? and even if he didn’t how can he say better than the original if he’s never heard it? THE ORIGINAl may have sang it BETTER but how would he know since he’s NEVER HEARD it before?? Yeah right? Levine should check out Lambert’s version live on LENO; that’s how you sing that song. Nakia changed it but he did not make it better. Personally I think it was not that good but ok. It just seems like no one wants to say anything negative to any reality show conestants any more (except SIMON), they are ALL SO GREAT just like idol this season. Get Real

You are so right and so glad someone actually watched the show before commenting. Levine knows Adam Lambert sang the song as CeeLo announced right before Nakia’s performance that Lambert sang it. Millions heard CeeLo say it. He’s a liar.

  7. lilyx says:

Haha I don’t believe him. The way he worded it was like he deliberately wanted to throw shade. His comments make no sense. If he never heard the song before in any way, how can he say it was better or that he was forced to like it? Just makes him look dumb and unlikable.

  8. Jacki says:

He’s got no class. Not only should he apologize to Pink and to Adam Lambert for his ignorant insulting comments, he should learn about today’s music or get another job that he’s more suited to. He has also made ignorant comments about other music on this show. Seriously, does he know anything? Is he incapable of even listening to the Grammy CD that HE is on along with Adam Lambert singing Pink’s WWFM? If he really knows so little about current music Levine doesn’t need to apologize to Adam/Pink so much as he should apologize to viewers of The Voice for being there under false pretenses.

  9. Teresa says:

Nakia did a great job with that song but of course he didn’t sing it as good as or better than Adam Lambert – Adam has amazing and unusually good vocal abilities. He just sang it differently. As for Adam Levine, never heard of him before this show so I really don’t care what he knows or doesn’t know let alone what he thinks. Unfortunately Levine looks an awful lot like my sister’s hubby – he is also a bit of a douche who often says inappropriate and stupid things. But then – he’s not on a tv show pretending to know what he’s talking about.

adam levine is A DOUCHE !

  11. Natasha says:

It’s so not classy for an artist to publicly diss a peer for a song he has heard, but even worse for a song he claims he HASN’T heard. Levine needs to learn a thing or two from Lambert about how to have class and be gracious, even while being true to yourself. Lambert is the master of that and millions love him for it.

  12. ShooFly says:

I’m sorry — Adam Levine is not allowed to not care for a song? While perhaps not phrased in the most diplomatic way, his comment just meant that while he liked Nakia’s rendition, he didn’t think he would care much for the song otherwise with a different (less dynamic) singer singing it. That’s not a diss on Adam Lambert. Adam Lambert IS a dynamic singer, and Adam Levine’s “diss” was more about the SONG than about Adam Lambert — since Adam Lambert didn’t write the song, the comment doesn’t really reflect on him or his version of the song at all, especially since Adam Levine hadn’t heard it. The comment is more a reflection on the song itself, which, let’s face it, is not a masterful work of art in and of itself and is not to everyone’s taste. In other words, if anything, it was more a “diss” of the songwriters. And I think many of the outraged Adam Lambert fans themselves would agree that they don’t believe anyone else could really do the song justice either… So in a way they are no better than Levine, since there probably ARE other (non-famous) singers who can and do sing the song well, and so wouldn’t such a statement (that all other versions are necessarily less good than Adam’s) be a “diss” on those other singers in the same way as Adam Levine’s statement was supposedly a “diss” on Adam Lambert? If I say “broccoli tastes lousy except the way my mom makes it”, is that a diss on every other cook who makes a fabulous broccoli casserole? Or does it mean that I just haven’t tasted those great casseroles yet?
    .
Adam Levine said he hadn’t heard the song before and that is probably true. It’s presumptuous to assume that that must be a lie. Just because his own song is on a COMPILATION CD that also has that song on it doesn’t mean that he would have LISTENED to that CD or even known what other songs were also on it; it just means that permission was given for his song to be included (and that may not even have been him who gave the permission — probably his record company would have been the one to give the OK). And with a busy career, it’s EXTREMELY possible that he hadn’t heard the song before. And if he doesn’t follow American Idol (which not everyone does), he probably isn’t familiar with Adam Lambert either. So let’s not be manufacturing all this subtext about him “lying” about having heard it before, etc.. And also realize that listening to other up-and-comer new artists (such as Adam Lambert) and being on top of that at all times ISN’T a requirement for being a performer or for knowing how to advise on performance; in fact some artists would prefer NOT to listen to other peer ‘popular’ artists, so as not to taint their own vision or inadvertently copy someone elses style. So saying someone isn’t qualified to mentor another just because they aren’t familiar with Adam Lambert is also a ridiculous and ignorant statement.

  13. Alot of u h8 Adam but u make mistakes and say the wrong stuff just lyk him and all the other celebs, urs just aren’t broadcasted all over the internet lyk his

  14. Jess says:

Ease off Adam Levine a bit, I haven’t heard the song and I don’t think he was trying to insult Lambert at all. I think it’s riduclous that such a fuss has been made when both parties are fine. He wasn’t being spiteful, he was just saying that Nakia performed it really well and he liked it. Maybe he could have worded it in a better way, but this amount of fuss over one comment is, in all honesty, a little petty.

  15. karen e says:

So what if Levine hasn’t heard of his song? I bet there are songs out there that a lot haven’t heard either. Calling a person stupid….. now that is unacceptable.
