Big Brother housemate Steve Gill has revealed the details of the terrorist attack which left him without both his legs and an eye.

Speaking about his tour of duty in Northern Ireland, Steve told how his regiment were walking down the infamous Falls Road when the IRA detonated a beer barrel full of explosives. As he lay on the ground, with one leg missing and the other one hanging off, republican sympathisers released an Alsatian Dog, which mauled Steve until a fellow soldier shot it.

The Sun quotes Steve as saying:

“I had no idea what damage had been done. My body couldn’t cope with the pain and all I could think about was my sore finger.”

“I was due to be married and looking forward to a long career in the Army.

“And there I was, I’d lost parts of my body, which knackers you for life, and my career was blown out of the water.”

However, Steve has moved on and rebuilt his life and now gives talks to other, injured soldiers.

He said: “They can see that I coped and am doing interesting things. It gives them hope that they will get through it, too.

Despite his disability sporty Steve is a transatlantic yacht racer and recently took part in the Royal Ocean Yacht Race with an amputee crew of ex-servicemen personal. Achievements like this are important to him because as he explains:

“If my children can see me doing what I’m doing with half a body, I want them to think, ‘Imagine what I could achieve’.

I purposely walk around looking the way I do. It’s better to be open about who you are.”

Its no wonder the bookies are already backing Steve as the BB11 champion…..Big Brother would seem like such a small win after everything else he has achieved.
