As we saw in last night’s Big Brother highlights show, Ashleigh and Scott were called into the Diary Room by Big Brother to be issued with formal warnings about their behaviour during a chat they had in the living area about Deana.

The incident they were warned about came when Ashleigh described how Deana ate her cereal, saying she ate with her fingers rather than with a spoon.

A laughing Scott revealed that his father had once owned an Indian takeaway, and he said, “They all do it, maybe it’s the culture.”

However, what we weren’t shown – but was reported in the media when the incident occurred – was Ashleigh impersonating Deana’s accent, which I suspect was edited out because C5 are wary of receiving yet more complaints…

Now, it could be that she didn’t impersonate Deana’s accent and it was merely a false account of the incident, but if it did happen and wasn’t shown, then as I said, I think it’s because C5 didn’t want another flood of complaints, and it’s this kind of censorship of footage from the house that I was worried would in fact happen.

It’s not that I have any overriding desire to hear Ashleigh, or anyone else for that matter, impersonating or belittling someone else, but what I do want is to be able to see footage from a reality TV show that shows the reality of what’s going on, and not a sanitized, edited version which negates the whole point of the show.

It equates to worst case scenario for me – as per this article – in that C5 will be über careful about what they broadcast as a knee jerk reaction to all the complaints Ofcom have received. But given that the number of viewers complaining is less than 1% of the show’s overall viewers, it’s a case of the actions of a few affecting many.

And that’s a shame because in all this egg shell treading, we’re losing the point of the show – reality.
