Big Brother 8: Carole Vincent’s Eating Disorder
52 year old mother, Carole Vincent, has admitted to her fellow housemates that she suffers from a rare eating disorder called ‘night eating syndrome.’
Carole said: “I call it my shameful secret. I search the cupboard for anything that will satisfy my craving. I’ve been getting up to eat several times a night, three of four nights a week, all my adult life.”
That could cause problems if the food gets rationed!

She is not as rare as you think. I am the author of “Lying in Weight: the Hidden Epidemic of Eating Disorders in Adult Women,” (Harper Collins, May 2007). Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder (like bulimia but no purging) are occuring in adults in epidemic numbers. Nearly half of binge eaters are men. It seems that life stresses: marriage, pregnancy, parenting, mid and late life push people over the edge. I looked at eating disorders through these stages. People in midlife go through no less than 15 major transitions, including menopause and aging concerns. Her problem is expensive. People who binge can go bankrupt. Thanks for bringing this up.
