I’m not sure that those who are genuinely concerned by racism and work so very hard to stamp it out were well served by Emily’s eviction from the house and I consider that this might in fact be a case where PR really has gone mad, shoots itself directly in the foot and adds fuel the opposing factions who suggest that we are being overly sensitive. I have two lovely nieces who’s father is African and if you ask them about colour, they will say that they are brown. I have watched them both grow into beautiful young ladies and have been appalled and shamed by some of the things they have had to put up with in their short lives from those who would stoop to using hurtful racist comments and actions in order to bolster their own sense of superiority or to appear humorous in front of their friends and so I am a little sensitive when I hear this kind of thing particularly on TV. In Emily’s case however, I do not believe that she had any intension to be offensive or hurtful. I feel that she is very naïve and certainly more than a little ignorant but it appeared to me that she was making a bungled attempt at endearing herself to Charlie by using what she believed to be ‘Black Speak’. It is true that black people DO sometimes refer to each other a ‘Nigger’ in conversation / banter as was acknowledged during BB Bigmouth later and I think Emily also attempted a poor unsuccessful explanation of this herself. When friends or those who would like to be friends communicate, they often try to mimic mannerisms and use similar expressions in order to win some favour or acceptance. If anything, I think it shows that Emily was playing a submissive role in the conversation and not a dominant or aggressive one. I agree, with some of the other posters, that she should have been given a warning and that it might have been better to openly discuss this rather than to exclude her.
Charlie MUST also be warned for her bullying!
