Is It The End For Big Brother?

We all know that Big Brother is on the decline, but what I hadn’t realised was that last Friday night’s eviction (the one I attended, in case you didn’t already know!) was the least watched BB eviction since 2001.

In fact last Friday’s show which saw Belinda, Belinda, Belinda evicted, attracted only 2.4 million viewers and this series is generally acheiving 15% less viewers than the 2007 series.

Last night a C4 source told The Sun: “We’d prefer the ratings to be growing, but those days are gone.”

They added: “It still does well compared to everything else on C4.

“It’s still young and upmarket. It could continue on its general level of gentle decline and still be significant. We are relatively happy.”

Channel 4 have to say that though, they have already paid for two more series of the show. Though one has to wonder if they would be better cutting their losses now before they end up with no viewers at all.

I have spent some time wondering why the show is going downhill so quickly and I think that the format is now very old. Big Brother bosses tried to bring back more ‘normal’ people for this series as many critics suggested, and the heaven/hell task reeks of the rich house, poor house task which was so popular during Kate Lawler’s series. But none of these measures have worked. People have seen it all before and people are bored. Few sitcoms or TV shows last as long as nine series so why should a reality TV show be any different?

I think Big Brother is nearing the end of its natural TV life. Does anyone out there agree?
