Ant and Dec defend decision to allow Susan Boyle On BGT

Ant and Dec have spoken out in defence of the decision to allow Susan Boyle to audition for Britain’s Got Talent.
Susan had an emotional breakdown after failing to win the show but Ant told the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival: “You can’t start censoring people because you don’t think they would be able to handle the fame and the attention as well as they should.
“You can’t turn round and say you don’t think she’s going to handle it that well so we won’t have her on the show.”
Dec said that Boyle appeared on the show “to fulfil a dream. How do you say you can’t go on?”

Of course she should have been allowed to enter the show, she put up with a lot for a very long time and did better then I could have.
The problem started when everything began to spin out of control with the tabloids.
They continuously imply that she had a breakdown because she didn’t win.
Were they not watching what was happening to her for 2 weeks before that? She was on the verge for a long time and nothing was done to help.
That’s where BGT made their mistake.
Well I guess it wasn’t really a mistake, after all, they got their ratings.
Hello Brenda, you could have a point there with reference to the breakdown. But as a fellow northerener I do agree with Ant and Dec you can’t discriminate against a person and not allow them to enter irrespective of their condition or what they have gone through.
Strange as it may seem the general feeling from the judges of BGT and the X factor programme is that all contestants are likely to have issues over the amount of media attention they get.
In my own personsl view the show has become bigger and to be completely honest with you this level of bigging things up is not necessary.
In the annuals of musical history an artist needs to build a reputation and a repertoire over time and any media attention due was given only when necessary. The globalisation and what should I call it but the internet city, has not improved matters for artists as a whole – instead it has taken away the need for A & R men, plus talent spotters to be gainfully employed searching the regions for talented people.
Shouldnt these two vertically challenged untalented bufoons be at school instead of Edinburgh. The fact is SuBo wanted the cash but with it came the clinics-with some people you cant have one without the other.
Hello Khoustello,
Maybes’ we will all need the clinics if we ever win anything big. Complete with compulsory Shrinks.
I can’t imagine anyone going through what Susan Boyle did without having difficulty. It was way over the top, something she didn’t anticipate and of course wasn’t prepared for.
The media did that and I hope it never happens to anyone again.
