Britain’s Got Talent 2011 Semi Finals: Jessica Hobson breaks down in tears because she didn’t get to ‘choose what to sing’ (VIDEO)
Before tonight, we had thought that Jessica Hobson was one of the best singers we had ever heard on Britain’s Got Talent.
We loved her audition, because not only can she sing but she is truly musically talented and her piano playing is just beautiful.
Tonight Jessica was dressed in a stunning black sparkly dress and sat at a glossy baby grand piano, playing a jazzy version of Single Ladies by Beyonce.
However, she failed to live up to our high expectations. She sounded nervous and off key at times and the arrangement of the track was just terrible.
The dance segment was stiff and forced and the judges looked shocked by the slip in Hobson’s standard.
Michael McIntyre ‘sensed’ her nerves but said she did well to give it everything.
Amanda Holden thought she did a ‘really good job’ but pointed out her ‘extraordinary’ nerves and added that she needs to be ‘less rigid.’
Simon Cowell, after being attacked by a fly, told Jess that she started fine and then got ‘increasingly worse.’ He hated the dancers, hated the ‘dated’ version of the song and advised her that she should have sang on her own, without the ‘silly dress.’ He admitted that the talented performer had been ‘let down by the show.’
David Hasselhoff agreed with his boss, and said Hobson could have done better ‘on her own,’ without the big show.
Jessica was devastated by the comments and sobbed while telling the judges ‘I didn’t choose what to sing.’
We felt so sorry for her, but wanted to hear more….who did choose the song? Who forced her to dance? We didn’t get to hear because once it became clear that she was about to spill the beans, she was ushered off stage by a concerned Ant and Dec, who probably had worried producers screaming in their ears to go to a break.
Did you enjoy Jessica’s performance? Was Simon Cowell right? Was she ‘let down by the show’? Compare the two videos and leave your comments below.

This lady is EXCELLENT!!!
Let her sing what she chooses
Ge her back
Chin up!!!
I was really upset to see this truly incredibly naturally gifted girl being let down. What a waste. However, Jessica really has absolutely nothing to worry about. She doesn’t need all the glitz to make her look or sound good, simply because she is such a natural. She shouldn’t be on the TV Butlins, as she has nothing to prove. She’s stunningly beautiful, a musician and a great singer.
This girl is incredible. If somebody doesn’t sign her up, then it is huge loss and a waste of a wonderful talent. I’m from a strong music background and while Simon Cowell may be a good business man at PR and marketing, that’s it, period. He’s a pimp for corporate paedos. Simon knows absolutely “nothing” about music. that is a well established fact. He failed at everything until his daddy got him a job.
Please vote for Jessica, as a matter of principle. She deserves much more than this. You already know that this girl is much more talented than the likes of Cheryl Cole and Leona Lewis.
Sad. Another example of big business covering up. It was her decision to go on the show and it should be up to her to decide what to sing etc. However, she is a good girl with plenty of potential and I am so pleased that ‘plastic’ Cowell has dropped her. She is so better off without him.
Something felt wrong about the way she was treated and with the way in which the show portrayed she slot. I was left feeling very uneasy.
Jessica is amazing.she is sexy and talented and has an amazing future ahead of her.Simon corella comments were completely uncalled for.if she fancies singing in our band drop us a line as we would love a great voice like hers in the group.wish her all the best for whatever the future holds and have my vote every time.mark.x
People keep talking about her being ‘forced to dance’ but she didn’t. All she did was stand there because she proved that dancing isn’t her strong point on ‘Over The Rainbow’ (BBC)
The treatment meted out to Jessica was a disgrace. Cowell sits there like he has no involvement in the production but he is clearly the supremo. Criticism is not about destroying people particularly when it is clear to anyone that she is very talented. This series was actually quite enjoyable mainly due to the fact that Cowelll was not involved and it would be better if he had stayed away. Michael McIntyre seems totally terrified of him and since Cowell came back he has been a waste of space.
Ok, so i watches the show tonight and i thought she was really good
, however i still dont get whats happened with this whole ‘its ITV’s fault’. So who was forcing her? And someone explain what exactly happend, thanks
Simon Cowell was disgraceful to Jessica, she is a talented girl and commenting on her dress and singing was a joke. His mind is clearly not with the show this year, maybe he should go back to America and stay there !!!!!! Dont give up Jessica, you are great.
That was awful what happened tonight. Its like uefa telling alex ferguson who to buy to play for them in the champions league games.
So sad!
You could hear that she had so much more to deliver but for some reason a strange medley(?) of poorly concieved stage moments followed some minimal piano work.
Now we know why!
In an attempt to please the broadest audience with the line up in a poor state of affairs, a career focussed producer crowbars a talented young woman into an act she doesn’t know and is unprepared for, simply because they see Beyonce as a “crowd pleaser”.
Simon Cowell’s mantra:
Always aim for the lowest common denominator; because then you can make it look easy.
Well, not tonight Simon!
You have…
An apology to deliver,
Suitable recompense to pay,
…and some humble pie to chew on.
The act sign a contract so basically the producers CAN tell them what to do and they are not allowed to talk to the media after. This has happened several times before – Cowell sits there critising an act for choice of song, dancing etc only for it to turn out its the producers who have told them they must do these things. So really it makes cowell look good as he gets to give his ‘honest’ opinion, panning the acts -when in truth he is one of them who makes decisions on this show. Its a joke.
Other acts tried to speak out against this but usually get cut off by the presenters. andrew Muir- forced to sing Imagine. A duo were forced to switch roles – from lead singer and guitar, their song was changed last minuite – they were then buzzed as they made mistakes due to lack of rehersal. Last year a father and son act were slated and they claimed they were forced to do the song. A quick change act, the woman sung which was heavily criticised but they claim they were told to sing by producers. The dance act last night said their music got changed. some acts have claimed they were only notified about being in the semi-finals just days before the lives. A young girl sang ‘superstar’ and was told it was a bad song choice, she claimed she didnt choose the song. The list goes on…
“We didn’t get to hear because once it became clear that she was about to spill the beans, she was ushered off stage by a concerned Ant and Dec, who probably had worried producers screaming in their ears to go to a break.”
Absolutely. It was awful. And Simon and Amanda were pretty rude as well, concentrating on the fly first before addressing her, I felt so sorry for her when this happened.
If Simon doesn’t like the choices of songs, he should sack the ITV production people who are choosing them.
It’s no good saying ‘i didn’t like your choice of song’, when the singer has no say in the matter – and that singer has probably been angry for days, being pressured into doing a song they don’t want to do, and then they do it, and to rub it all in, Simon tells them they made a bad choice in song…..it’s awful.
Were did she get that dressa anyone know?
Were did she get that dress anyone know?
I could not believe that the artist did not have a say in what she could do and actually voted, when I do not usually, for her. If an artist in the Britain’s got Talent show does not have a say in what they do, this is out of order as they have the talent and should just be guided by the show associates in the way they should produce themselves. It should not be a platform to crucify a good artiste like Jessica. I could not believe the stage show that she gave from the original audition. Please let her know I feel for her. If she had been used then the powers that be should be ashamed of themselve as she has talent and hopefully she will regain the confidence to continue and prove it to them.
