Britain’s Got Talent 2011: Stephen Mulhern explains Jessica Hobson song scandal!
Stephen Mulhern has attempted a little bit of damage limitation work on behalf of Britain’s Got Talent bosses today.
Many viewers were shocked when watching last night’s semi final, when talented singer Jessica Hobson broke down in tears after being criticised by Simon Cowell.
The music mogul hated her song choice of Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’, the arrangement of the track and also the fact that she left her trusty piano to attempt a dodgy dance routine for the second half of her performance.
However, as he gave his opinions, the 19 year old started sobbing and confessed that she wasn’t allowed to choose her own song for the semi finals show.
Many viewers took to forums and social networking sites to complain about the move and a fan commented on our blog post:
I felt terrible for Jessica just goes to prove that it all set up! What’s really nasty is that they set her up to knock her down as it was Simon (whose bloody show it is) that got her to do something she was clearly not happy with!
Another blasted:
Not her choice of song and the dance act had their music changed giving them 6 days to rehearse. It`s like somebody wanted to reduce their chances.
However, Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern has attempted to make light of the situation and speaking on This Morning, he said:
The reality is, the producers want the show to be right and they want performers and the auditionees to be the best they can be. So they’ll help them, they’ll support them, they’ll guide them.
She’s amazing at the piano, I wish she’d stayed there at the piano but it just didn’t work out.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on Jessica’s performance below!

She wouldn’t win anyway.
Katy, do u even know jessica! Have you even seen her preform untill last night! IF you havent then what fucking right do you have to make that comment!
Jessica is very talented and this scandal will only make her stronger. Jessica was wrongly done too by the show and i was extremely disappointed with Simon Cowell, I always had great respect for him and i think he has let himself down.
Emma, I have fеcking right to make any comment I want, love. And I still think Jessica wouldn’t win with any other song in the world. Yes she’s talented, she’s nice but she doesn’t have the wow-factor. She’s just a good singer and a lovely girl. That’s it.
As much as I like stephen he can’t say the acts are “guided” because I know as a FACT that jessica was forced to sing that song and they picked the “ridiculous” dress for her too wear. The whole act wasn’t her style at all, she’s a much more intense singer while they made her cheesy and unclassy. Don’t be fooled by what you see there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes!!
Shut up Smypthy voters ITV should hold their heads in shame Well done ITV for ruing her chances she did not want to sing beyonce why force her wear a black dress Shame on you ITV
This is hardly fair competition if so much goes on behind the scenes that the contestant cant control. Not just being forced to sing songs and wear clothes that are bad choices. But given certain contestants very little time to learn their appointed song and the way they place the acts. I’ve noticed that if the show favours a certain act, they will place them last. These are often acts that we later find have some speicial prior connection to Simon Cowell and his company. Kaitie Waissel and escala are two examples. I have an honours degree in psychology. Placing an act last produces what is known as a ‘recency’ effect. They always get more than their fair share of votes.
