Britain’s Got Talent 2012: Hugh Bonneville to play Mr Stink in TV adaptation of David Walliams’ book!

As fans of Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams will most likely know, as well as his role on the show and a long career as a comedian, David is also an author of children’s books…

And his latest book, Mr Stink, is being adapted for the BBC and will star Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville – who plays Lord Grantham in the period drama – as the title character.

Mr Stink, for those of you not in the know, is a tramp, so the role is the diametric opposite to Hugh’s Downton part.

The Mail reports, “Filming for the BBC One family comedy will begin next month, with Bonneville swapping his Downton country pile for a shabby garden shed.”

In the kids’ show, which is about lonely 12-year-old Chloe who befriends local tramp Mr Stink and invites him to hide out in her family’s garden., David will star as the Prime Minister in the story.

Of landing the role, Hugh said, “I’m delighted to be adding my own whiff to the odour that emanates from David Walliams, and his very funny, touching and thought-provoking story.”

And David added, “I am thrilled that Hugh is playing Mr Stink. He is one of the most popular and talented actors around, and is the perfect person to bring out the character’s humour and sadness.”

Also among the cast is comic actor Harish Patel, whose formerly starred in Run Fat Boy Run and Coronation Street.

The show is expected to air at Christmas.
