Fans of Britain’s Got Talent will know that four-piece group Luminites – who I can’t stop listening to! I just love them – are currently among the favourites to win this year’s show…
However, had the band members,Stephanie Edwards, JJ Clarke, Ben Francis and Corey Layzell, been cowed by bullies who saw their musical aspirations as “uncool”, they wouldn’t be where they are today.
But fortunately for the nation’s ears, they refused to be bullied into “conforming”, and now want young people to see them as anti-bullying ambassadors and as role models who shun drugs and who promote healthy living.
Of her own experiences of bullying at school, gorgeous Stephanie explained, “When you’re performing, people always want to tear you down.
“Everyone gets a bit of bullying at school. At my school it wasn’t cool to perform — it was like, ‘Why are you doing it?’ ”
And Ben, whose beatboxing gives the band a unique sound, also revealed to The Sun that his skill attracted bullies too.
He said, “I spent a lot of time walking around by myself making noises and people think it’s weird.”
Stephanie then added, “We’re all anti-drugs. That’s not a scene we’re into and we all try to look out for each other.
“We’re pleased to be role models, it’s important to us.”
But moving on to how they’re feeling ahead of tomorrow’s big final, JJ revealed that he and his band mates are just overjoyed to be a part of it.
And of the prospect that they may win, he said, “We haven’t dared to think that far ahead but it would be amazing.”
As I mentioned, I absolutely love Luminites, but that said, in terms of who I want to win BGT this year, I have about five favourites who I’d like to see take the crown so it’s a toughie!
Who do you want to see winning?
For now, here’s a reminder of Luminites in the semi-finals…
