Britain’s Got Talent: Ryan O’ Shaughnessy’s “No Name” song intrigues Simon Cowell

Ryan O'Shaughnessy on Britain's Got Talent and The Voice of Ireland

Ryan has popped up on another talent show recently...

19 year old Irish singer Ryan O’Shaughnessy walked onstage on Britain’s Got Talent tonight to find Simon Cowell in brisk form. Simon rapidly quizzed the self-proclaimed songwriter on his career and background and looked set to give him the brush-off…until he heard that there was a story behind the song Ryan was going to be singing!

Ryan’s original composition was a declaration of love to a girl he’s been friends with for years. Except this girl doesn’t know how he feels. And the sharp-witted Mr Cowell spots the story potential in this – pointing out that if his audition makes it to TV (which it clearly did), then that’ll be the first time the girl finds out. Hopeless romantics in the stadium all sigh in unison.

Interestingly, Ryan refuses to give David Walliams and Simon the girl’s name. Guess what the song’s called? ‘No Name‘. Clever, right?

The song’s gorgeous though. A romantic, charming acoustic ditty that has the ladies in the audience dewy-eyed. Ryan’s got a great voice, and he goes to prove what he said earlier in his introduction – you can put much more emotion into your own compositions, because they mean so much more.

What did the judges say?

  • David Walliams: I can’t believe she won’t go out with you. That’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, sung incredibly well. That was absolutely astonishing. Well done.
  • Alesha Dixon: Ryan, that was really sweet and sincere. I really enjoyed it. And I felt it. It was really lovely. Well done.
  • Simon Cowell: Have you played her that song? So that’s the first time she’s ever gonna hear it? Wow. Well, if that doesn’t work, nothing will. Are you sure you don’t want to give me the name? But she’s gonna know when she watches this, I presume? I think you’ve got a brilliant sense of melody, I think your lyrics are superb. And I love your voice.

No need to ask whether Ryan continued to the next stage of Britain’s Got Talent. You’ll be seeing him again in the finals. Were you a fan of Ryan’s performance tonight?

Actually the song is called “No Name” because we (his college classmates) told him not to ruin the song by naming it. He came into class with the song and played it for us and when asked for the name he said it didn’t have a name and his friends had just been asking him to play “No Name” so it stuck. He wrote this song himself months before he ever went near Cowell.

    The lyrics;
Every now and then I see a part of you
    I’ve never seen,
Birds can swim and fish can fly
the road is long, I wonder why?
One of these days you will realise
what you mean to me ohhh,
Every now and then I see a part of you
    I’ve never seen.

Well I try to talk but I can’t
my soul has turned to steel,
This happens every now and then when i
try to tell you how I feel.

So if you ever love somebody
you got to keep them close,
When you lose grip of their body
    you’ll be falling,
    Because I’m falling,
    Deeper in love,
    In love,
    Deeper in love,
    In love,
    Deeper in love,
    With you. X

    Hope this is some help.
    WARNING: don’t sound the same
    with an English accent x
