Britain’s Got Talent: Shaheen Jafargholi Sings Valerie

Britain's Got Talent Logo

On tomorrow night’s Britian’s Got Talent we will meet a little boy with a huge dream

“I’m Shaheen, I turned 12 yrs old last week and I live in Swansea with my mum and cat”

Shaheen is here with his single mum Karen who is his biggest fan and both hope the song he’s prepared today will blow the Judges away

“I’m singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse, as it’s one of my favourite songs to sing, I sing it at family occasions, and my Grandad really loves it”

Shaheen chats to Ant & Dec and then walks on stage, can this little boy make his and his mums dreams come true?

He starts singing Valerie by Amy Winehouse but halfway through Simon stops him despite the audience obviously enjoying his performance.

“You got this really wrong” says Simon

“What do you sing apart from that?” asks Simon

“I can also sing Who’s Loving You by Michael Jackson” says a nervous Shaheen, “Do you wanna give that a go?” asks Simon

Shaheen starts singing his second song – the audience immediately stand up with applause, Simon has the biggest grin on his face much to Ant & Dec’s amusement who are standing at the side of the stage

But is making Simon grin from ear to ear and a standing ovation from the Cardiff audience enough to take Shaheen to next round?

Episode 2 of Britain’s Got Talent on air this Saturday on ITV1 at 7.55pm

hey guys! Shaheen is in the same drama school i used to go to, hes a legend and a half, really talented. he was on tour doing michael jackson’s thriller. =D

  2. mitra says:

    does anyone know his surname?

  3. someone says:

Was this little thing an ‘act’? Like, did Simon plan to say that to Shaheen, etc?

  4. me says:

Yeh why did Simon stop him?

  5. me says:

Why did Simon stop him? He didn’t get the words wrong did he?

  6. Janet says:

I think his speed was slower than the music!
His family name is Jafargholi and both first and last name sound Persian!

  7. miaamiaaa . says:

    I though he was AMAZING.
should be professional my thoughtss (Y).
    LOVEE HIMMM X

  8. meadowman says:

Shaheen is a member of the Mark Jermin Stage School in South Wales. This extremely talented youbg actor/singer will be recongnised as Troy in the recent cbeebies series “grandpa in my pocket” (made in Wales)

  9. Dee Dee says:

Oh my god, I cant stop rewinding my sky+ and listening to Shaheen singing. It takes my breath away every time
That boy is gonna be a superstar!!!!!
To Shaheen’s mum – You done good girl!

  10. C Williams says:

Shaheen Jafargholi. Fantastic rendition of that song, (which I wouldn’t have known as a Jackson number), I’ve noticed that he’s been a guest actor in Casualty, Torchwood & as meadowman says above, he’s due to play a character named Troy in ‘Grandpa in my pocket’(starring James Bolam).

Hope to hear lots more fab music from this Swansea Jack!

  11. Steven says:

Simon stopped him because it was a complete set up. He was singing behind the music but that’s what is truly meant by ’singing with Soul’ It comes from Blues & Gospel music. Examples Aretha Franklin/Marvin Gaye/Amy Winehouse. The best vocalist all do it but more in the pocket than he was. Even in rap eg Snoop/Eminem, that’s what having a good flow means……Anyway back to the point,
it was staged to create great TV drama and also give maximum impact once he started to sing a song that allowed him to show off his voice to its full potential.

  12. Livy says:

So did Shaheen know that Simon was going to do this?

  13. RAY says:

Yeah – they were all in on it – it was obvious – just too much of a coincidence otherwise

  14. Lucy h says:

    Yes Steven, (april 19th, 2:06am)
You’ve hit the nail on the head!! It’s sooo obviously staged it’s untrue. Funny how these acts are the last in the show too. Their just there to make good telly!
I agree Shaheen is a very talented singer and actor, thats why he’s already landed himself a big part in cbeebies new show, “grampa in my pocket”. Even my 3yr old son recognised him on Britains got talent as “Troy”!!

This defeats the objective of the show.. to find truly talented people and give them a break in to show business.

  15. blob says:

well, its not the last on the show. its the last on TV. u do realise that each tv show mashes up different towns and cities?!

  16. CAROL says:

set up? NO WAY! I’ve watched practically every show Simon judges on and I love Aerican Idol – he is worse than that with other contestants – he can just stop people – he does have a knack of knowing when a song doesn’t work. I thought he was fabulous!!! can’t wait to hear more!!!!!

  17. timmy says:

get real – it was soooooo a setup – he knew that he sang lead in the michael jackson tribute tour – and was acclaimed for it – so they set it up

  18. Steven says:

In reply to Lucy,.. even though it is set up, I don’t think it defeats the objective of the show. Yes Shaheen is at drama school and has already had breaks in some aspects of his career, but the show has now brought that talent to the forefront of millions of people that weren’t aware of it and could hopefully give him a further break to guarantee that his talent could turn into a successful career. There are 1000’s of actors and singers that study their art, get an opportunity to be in something, and good as they may be, are never heard of again. Sometimes you need much more than one chance to shine and be noticed by different people in the industry.

To Carol…. Yes Simon is worse to many people on shows and he knows that that also makes good TV. But how would he have known that Shaheen did have another song to sing? Why would Shaheen have even had an alternative backing track with him? Why would he choose to sing Valerie when he has been singing MJ songs in the theatre and is clearly good at it. Not to mention the obvious comparisons that he would get to MJ, who sung the song at the same age and the version is only slightly better than Shaheen’s.

If he didn’t have another song, Simon would have been responsible for stopping a twelve year old boy in his tracks that was doing really well and clearly could sing, whether it was the right song or not. Shaheen would have had to start Valerie again, and that would have been very very bad TV and made Simon look bad. When Simon is rude, he’s generally right, but when someone is truly talented he’s very respectful. It was a win win for Simon to create great drama, impact and ongoing discussion (like we’re having and millions of other people are) and also look as if he made the right call.

As Timmy says, Simon would have been totally aware that Shaheen played MJ in the theatre. MJ was amazing at 12 and anyone playing that role would have to be pretty amazing too.

  19. martin yates says:

if you wanna know the real reason why he stopped him..is because its a women’s song simon has never liked boys singing women songs but i tell you something that boy was A M A Z I N G! he is my favorite audition of britains got talent history i want his autograph lmaoo he is like me i sing women’s songs like..whitney houston, aretha franklin, mariah carey me and him would get on great lol .

  20. Lisa McGarry says:

Auditionees have to come with two songs prepared so Simon would have know that Shaheen had another track.

  21. Michael says:

Simon doesnt know what he wants…or he does and gets confused…Last week he put a dancer who was shown her thrupennie bits to the world into the next round with no problem saying ”Fabia we adore you” ..Then last night another dancer this time a male one Madam Trish near enough the same act and Simon said NO!!

  22. Michael says:

Oh! and to give Shaheen full credit for his acting he also acted in Casulty and Torchwood.

  23. A says:

What is “singing behind the music”?

  24. A says:

What is singing behind the music??????????

  25. Michael says:

Simon said”Sometimes you need much more than one chance to shine and be noticed by different people in the industry”.
Why i think Susan should win shes had one chance with a charity c.d. 12 years ago and now this is her first real break in nearly half a century wheras Shaheen who isn’t even in his teens yet has recently starred as Michael Jackson in the stage musical Thriller Live. The show started off in Wales and and then went on tour in Germany, Holland and Ireland. (Susan tour was around her local)
Hes also starred in BBC’s Torchwood and Casualty and starred opposite Gary Lineker in a Walkers ad for Comic Relief. He also starred in CBBC’s Granda in my pocket on BBC1. So i think he’ll get plenty more chances before he gets his driving licence but thats only my opinion on why i think Susan should get this break this time. The kid is a good singer and the world is his oyster and if all that fails im sure he’ll do a world tour as a MJ impressionist.

  26. Brak says:

So he’s already toured as a young Michael around Europe and has appeared in a few TV shows! He’s even pictured on the BBC site in their children’s show. Not the lad’s fault but he has far more experience than was ever made on, like if to dupe people!

  27. [...] year old Shaheen Jafargholi has become Britain’s Got Talent second YouTube sensation this [...]

  28. martin yates says:

singing behind the music is .. you are too slow and cant keep up with the music

  29. Steven says:

In answer to Martin Yates,…. “Valerie isn’t a womens song! It’s written and sung by the Zutons (check it out)! Mark Ronson and Amy covered it.
Is your voice as good as Shaheen’s?

  30. samdajedi says:

There are all kinds of stories on the internet saying Simon knew he had another song. (Obvious because the music was ready for song 2) Simon heard the kid and helped him. Simon knew that his talent wouldn’t show through with the Amy Winehouse song was much as with the Michael Jackson song. Even though his talent was obvious with either song, the Michael Jackson song showed his talent much, much better. I played it back to back with the original and this kids version is just as good OR BETTER than the Michael Jackson version. The final against the 46yr old woman singer who was on last week will break any ratings record the show has.

  31. Nboo says:

Big up Shaheen, He is the cutest kid and such a nice boy too :0)
I was in one of the gospel choirs on the MJ tour last year and we had a real laugh with the cast.
Hope he does really well on the show. He mashed up the place with the MJ song – eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezy my yuuuute :0)

  32. Cheryl says:

I, like others on here have said, LOVE this kid!!! I have played his video over & over & shown it to everyone that I can think of! CAN’T WAIT to hear more from him! So… as far away as the Bay Area (California) USA – we applaud you!

  33. bigmouth says:

in actual fact all acts are asked to bring 2 songs incase something goes wrong with one of them i should know as i auditioned 2 years ago. shaheen is a great singer but i do agree that susan should win cos she needs a break it seemed like shaheen was put across as an unfound talent when infact he is already really successful .
also when shaheen speaks he seems like he has been told exactly what to say that kinda pisses me off

  34. Anne says:

I doubt it was a set up…. every auditionee is told to bring the backing track to two songs in case the first is inappropriate….
And Shaheen wasn’t as well known before this show; he show acted as publicity!:)

and he chose to sing valerie for his grandfather so I suppose its fair enough he didnt sing the michael jackson song from the get go…
