Piers Morgan says that Americans want to beat Susan Boyle

susan-boyle

Piers Morgan has said that Americans will go all out to beat Susan Boyle’s Britain’s Got Talent performance in their own American version of the show.

Morgan told The Futon Critic: “The British show got record ratings up 50% because of the Susan Boyle phenomenon. And I have got no doubt that we are going to see significant increases in the ratings of America’s Got Talent this summer.

“I think Americans are very competitive, particularly when it comes to the Brits, and I think that America’s going to want to tune in to see how America responds to the challenge, you know? Have you got anyone who can beat our Susan?”

He added: “Do I think there’s a Susan Boyle act in there that could have the same kind of effect on the world? Yeah, I think there’s two or three that, you know, depending on how they go down with the American public, could be really, really big acts.

“So I’m very excited and again the Susan Boyle phenomenon has pulled through into the American show.”

Piers, speak for yourself please. Americans feel that Susan Boyle is a rare bird. And when we are looking for our own successes, it is not to equal or replace someone else, especially not someone who is irreplaceable. I just don’t think you get either point. You are trading on her popularity, and in a tone that is essentially derogatory. BGT and now AGT are out to further your shows by trying to trade on this rare event whilst denying that she what is truly rare. Susan has proved everything she needs to prove. If you put her up in competition again, you are going to incur some great displeasure multiplied by probably millions of times. It is time for you to accept what all of us have, that Ms. Boyle is no longer someone to beat, she has won for life. Now it is time for her to shake this dust off her feet and go on with what her natural talent calls for. I want to see her with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, and perhaps with a t.v. special of her own. I’d like to see her do a concert with sax Julian, too. Americans will win without having to beat out someone. Get used to it.

  2. Patruska says:

Good grief why didn’t you do this to Paul Potts? You just let him go his merry way. But poor Susan continues to get trashed in the news because of BGT. The only wqay she will get positive press is to get out on her own. Just because Susan is so popular your going to keep trying to use her for competition which means she’ll still be canon fodder for the tabloids. Set Susan free. You’ve ridden on her back long enough. Its time for Susan to move on .Susan is a superstar now. She has a worldwide fanbase. BGT,AGT and the X-Factor are small potatoes now. I hope Susan break free from the parasite circus called BGT .

  3. Patricia says:

I agree with both of the above posts, set Susan free. Use Paul Potts. Susan doesn’t need BGT or AGT. She has got bigger and better things to do now. I never watch those shows. I want to buy Susan’s CD’s.

  4. Rosemary says:

Please, Piers. Don’t subject Susan to any more of this competition mania. She has paid her dues, she has won millions and millions of hearts around the world. People will look much more kindly on you and the BGT, AGT, and X-Factor if you all do what is best for Susan and not what will allow people to continue to ride the coattails of her glorious arrival in the hearts and souls of people all over the world. I see a big disenchantment with the above shows with every sign that they will further exploit Susan. Do yourself, Susan’s fans, and especially Susan a favor and let her begin to really live her dream.

  5. PWattis says:

Piers, Susan is a lady who is also a wonderfully talented and unique musical artist. She is not a “phenomenon” or any other “thing” for you to use to promote your interests. I don’t know what americans you have been talking to but I know many who can’t wait for Susan to be free of BGT. We want more of her, but on her own terms. We want to buy her CDs, go to her concerts, see her on the West End or on Broadway, watch her on TV. But most of all we want her to be happy with her life and her career. There will never be another Susan Boyle. I could care less about AGT. The only episode I would watch is one in which Susan performs.

  6. PWattis says:

Just one more thing, Why isn’t Diversity the one to beat?

  7. AFan says:

PWattis, stop making a fool of yourself. If it wasn’t for BGT there would be no Susan Boyle. Give credit where it is due.

  8. Jeanne says:

Please–let America’s Got Talent be its own (little) show, with its own talent, and have nothing whatsoever to do with Susan Boyle. She is no one needing to be ‘beaten’ by anybody here in the US anyhow. You do an injustice to this lovely, talented, one-of-a-kind woman by suggesting any other country should ‘find its own Susan Boyle’ or ‘beat Susan Boyle’ when you jolly well know each and every human being becoming a part of any of these talent shows is an individual and deserves to be treated as such, not compared with truly exceptional contestants from earlier such shows. The media rhetoric surrounding Susan is nothing short of ridiculous; I also find it ludicrous that folks from Britain’s Got Talent actually expect Susan to ‘appear’ on AGT or on the X Factor! Cripes, hasn’t the woman done enough for you yet to ‘earn her stripes’? Once the BGT tour is over with, can’t that be ‘it’? What will it take for Susan Boyle to finally be set free to pursue her real career? We here in the US hate to see her continue to be ‘used and abused’ in any way whatsoever. If you cannot stop the tabloid nonsense against her, perhaps you can at least refrain from any suggestion that ‘Americans want to beat Susan Boyle’. As an American, I find even that relatively simple phrase to be entirely offensive.

  9. JennyZ says:

    Piersy,

Have you realized that Susan has already taken off and fly in the air. You can help others to take off too, but you don’t have to make them horse race and see if who beats who because they are humans, not animals.

    Thanks.

    JennyZ

  10. Teesiel says:

    Piers, I’m confused.
Diversity won, so why is it Susan Boyle you are using in your attempt to create ratings? Never heard of trying to beat 2nd place.
Oh, that’s right she was the real winner of BGT. forced myself to watch the full 2 hours of AGT last night. It was painful. AGT is no BGT at the moment–Hasselhoff needs to go..

  11. Vendig says:

    Piers,
I am somewhat confused. Susan Boyle is British and I realize she is your talent find from BGT, and was the 2nd place winner, but why would you bring her to America for AGT, except to boost the ratings for that show.
You cannot compare any other talent to this lady. And, why would you think she is someone that Americans should try to beat? She is unbeatable!

  12. xeno says:

I do not understand why Susan Boyle continues to obsess the people in charge of the “Got Talent” franchise. Didn’t they say that it was better for her to come in second, because that would take all of the pressure off of her? Well then, why isn’t the pressure on that mediocre dance troupe rather than on Susan? Piers and the rest want to deny that Susan is the star of BGT, while at the same time exploiting the fact that she is the only person from that show whom the public cares about. If not for Susan, no one in America would care about BGT and its motley collection of vaudeville acts. It will be a happy day when Simon and his vultures stop exploiting Susan Boyle and allow her to go on with her career.

  13. Jan says:

I watched AGT and it’s a waste of TV time with all of the below standard acts.
This show needs better guidelines. It appears to be trashy. Please just have auditions on for 1 hour for 1 night.
Susan has set the standard higher. I hope she has the choice of appearing on the show and only if it benefits HER.

  14. Deborah says:

I agree entirely with Joly and Patruska. Nice way to try and frame this as a competition. Sorry. I’m an American too and I have no interest in your AGT or IDOL. Of course I’ll watch if Susan is on, but I’m fed with you trying to manipulate viewership. Set Susan free. Where’s her lawyer?
Can we dump this fickle nobody known as Piers Morgan?

  15. Carol says:

You just don’t get it. Piers, do you even know the definition of phenomenon? “a rare or unusual person or event” Key word being “rare”. To insinuate that you can just go and find “another Susan Boyle” is to show how cheaply you really hold her. It is demeaning to her and frankly, does not put you in a very good light. In one of your interviews, you said yourself that she “had the voice of an angel”…now you are acting as that’s not that big a deal. Please stop using Susan to further your own agenda.

  16. Marty says:

In using Susan’s name constantly to get more publicity for AGT, why not mention the breakdown she had? You remember, the one she had because you wouldn’t let her leave when she wanted to?
    I’m stunned.
Bring the dance team to AGT, everyone was so thrilled when they won, right?
Enough is enough, leave her alone.

  17. Patricia says:

@AFan , So just because Susan won second place on BGT she has to be a slave to the show for another year?! She doesn’t owe them anything ,its her fans that put her where she is.BGT is not even promoting Susan, just the opposite. All Susan has to do is get on stage and sing and her fans love her. Susan could have had a career years ago but she made a sacrifice for her parents. When she went on the BGT show ,she was discovered by the world not BGT. Anyone can go on that show, but Susan is the peoples choice. I hope she see’s she doesn’t need BGT ,they need her but its time for her to do her own thing. Staying with BGT,AGT or the XFactor will be an albatross tied around her neck.

  18. calford says:

The spectacle I observed on AGT last evening was undeserving of a talent such as that of our fabulous Susan Boyle. Sorry Piers, she is not in the same league.

  19. Stevieboy says:

Once a tabloid journalist, always a tabloid journalist, eh, Piers!
And here was me thinking that you actually cared for Susan. I should have known that you would revert to type and dance to the piper who pays your wages.
Well, I am glad to say that Susan has transcended your BGT, AGT, and X-Factor shows. She has achieved Supernova status and the sooner that she is free from that infernal contract to do things her own way and follow her dream, the better it will be for her, her devoted fans and the world of music.
There can never be and there will never be another Susan Boyle.
Wake up and smell the coffee, Piers.

  20. teri johnson says:

Hey Piersy, I know you have Susan on your mind 24/7, and cannot help talking about her at every chance you get, but Diversity won BGT, did they not? It is clear though the “People’s Winner” is Miss Boyle, noting the receptions of rapture she is getting at all the BGT tour appearances…I know this is just publicity for AGT to get in the media, as everyone reads any article with the name “Susan Boyle” embedded in it.
I do not watch AGT, but I will watch if Miss Boyle appears as has been mentioned.
If she does come to Vegas, that may be a good time for you to do your promised dinner. It is kind of overdue….

  21. RJ says:

Wasn’t it Diversity who won BGT? How long will BGT, ITV, whoever and their brother continue to exploit Susan and ride her coat tails? I for one can’t wait until Susan is totally on her own and not beholding to BGT or anyone else for that matter. FREE SUSAN!!!

  22. sabrina says:

    Dear Piers,

I thought you were smart enough to know that a ‘phenomenon’ cannot be created by a TV show. It’s clear from the comments made by you and Simon Cowell, that all wanted a dance troupe, not a singer, to win BGT, who knows why? It’s clear also that it was the public, not you all on that show, Ant, Dec the judges, several of whom said publicly that they thought it would be best if Susan didn’t win, for the sake of the show!!! How wrong can people be!

The public, in countries across the globe, chose Susan, not as a competitor in any competition but as one of those rare people who come along every once in a while and make the world a better place.

Do you not realize that you cannot create an American Susan’? It is exactly that, created images of what someone in Hollywood decides is beauty or talent or both, that the world has now said they reject.

Please do not underestimate the ability of the American public to realize when they are being manipulated. Not a single American I know is interested in finding an American Susan. A talented American that has yet to be discovered, yes, but not a replica of Susan. To even suggest that possibility is an insult to both Susan and to anyone trying to make on their own merit.

BGT gets credit for giving the world the chance to hear and see Susan. Now she needs to ‘fly away’ on her own to become what she wanted to be in the first place, a professional singer. She has an enormous, global fan-base and doesn’t need AGT or BGT and hasn’t since her video was released online two months ago.

If she wants to appear as a guest on AGT out of some sense of loyalty to you all, I hope it is appreciated and that is up to her, but please let it be because of Susan herself, whose admirers in the US would tune in to see her. But do not try to use her to boost the ratings of the show. Again, unless it is made clear to her that this is the only reason she is being invited. Iow, be honest.

And I too would like to know why AGT isn’t trying to find another ‘Diversity’. They were the winners weren’t they (and I like them a lot as people btw) and didn’t Simon say the best act won?

  23. Julie Carlon Offutt says:

    Mr. Morgan,

Americans do not want to beat Susan Boyle! On the contrary, it seems to me that only BGT and the tabloids in Britain are trying to beat her! But, trust me, it’s not working! Susan no longer needs your tour or your publicity. She doesn’t need AGT or Las Vegas. She really doesn’t need to come to USA to tour or to any other country in order to “become” a Star or sell CDs or DVDs. She has achieved something that no other professional singer in history has achieved. She’s touched millions and millions of souls with not only her voice but also her unique combination of humor and good heartedness. I personally hope that she turns to Barbra Streisand as a model and refuses to tour for the sake of touring as Barbra did. We will buy her music, no matter what she does. We love what she’s given to us and beg you to let her go, let her be “Free Again.” The lassie deserves to determine what kind of professional singer she wishes to be, for the choice is hers and we will follow her and support her whatever. God grant her the peace she needs to make her choices.

  24. 2SusanBFans says:

    Mr. Morgan,

How dare you! You have no business speaking for America or me. When it comes to Miss Boyle, America has spoken for it’s self. She is loved and respected by Americans and there is no need for her to prove anything. Her talent and beauty is not something for you or Simon to use and then throw to the side. We are not looking for another Susan Boyle….there will never be another one.

The competition is over and Miss Boyle won. She’s a worldwide STAR and has way out classed BGT and you! It’s time she records her songs and do what she wants. Let the Little Lady from Scotland sing. We want to see her smile again and share that wonderful since of humor.

    We Love Her! Got it???

  25. 2SusanBFans says:

Oh, by the way, since it appears that Diversity won BGT, shouldn’t they be the ones to beat? Just asking….

  26. donniekat says:

Hey Piersy, would AGT allow Susan to appear on the show to promote her upcoming CD in the States?? I see that as the only viable reason to show up – otherwise, forget it. Super Star Susan has far outgrown any and all talent shows.

  27. mtrvrpoet says:

    Piers,

You’re forgetting what being a FRIEND means. You showed some knowledge of what being a true friend to Susan is in your defense of her earlier. With your statements about AGT & exploiting Susan, I think you’ve got your thinking in your wallet & ratings instead of what it means to be a friend. I’m disappointed in you. Remember, integrity & honor take time to earn but can be quickly lost. You are walking on the wrong side of that line right now. Americans & people from many other countries other than Britain love & support Susan as a PERSON & NOT a COMMODITY. You got a lot of global people following you. Don’t mess that up by making it for the wrong reason – to keep an eye on you & make sure you’re not hurting her. It would be best if we could be watching you stand up for her & HER best interests. You’re in the media business which relies on the “fan” base. One wrong move w/ Susan & you’ll be coming up against the fighting side of way more people than you bargain for….

My prayers are w/ you for wisdom & integrity & to not be selfish & exploiting.. to be a FRIEND and not a FOE of Susan.

My prayers are w/ Susan always – for her dreams, strength, peace, joy, & wisdom to see the wolves amongst the sheep.

  28. judykg says:

I only know who you are because of Susan. I don’t watch any of the shows, and won’t unless Susan is on there. Guess that’s why you want her to appear, but you can’t ‘create’ another Susan phenomenon. I truly believe it’s a once in a lifetime deal. There’s just a spark there that I’ve never experienced before. I applaud your support of her, and we are judging you by your continued support – or perceived lack there of. I don’t think she is so fragile as has been portrayed, but all hearts are fragile. Please be careful with her and stay a loyal friend and supporter since we out here can’t. Yeh, I’m from the US, and have already pre-ordered her CD.
P.S. OK, now were you in the audience at Wembley or not??

  29. Mick says:

    Susan Boyle is incomparable.

  30. jlajhoe says:
