We’ve been a little bit light on Britain’s Got Talent posts at Unreality TV since the show started. Well, we’re going to change that with a bumper post about BGT tonight!

I caught a bit of chat about the show on JK and Joel’s Radio One show the other day. JK was saying that on the first night of auditions he almost cried three times.

Me too! I had a lump in my throat for the baton twirling kid. I had a lump in my throat for the Carphone Warehouse opera singer. Tonight, I almost blubbed when Tony Lamb took the stage with his guitar and sang a song about his brother.

Were you moved too? You’re not alone – loads of people texted into the JK and Joel show to agree.

The thing is, Britain’s Got Talent is lighting a fire under the reality/talent show genre. While Grease Is The Word was thrashed by Any Dream, BGT has reinvigorated this type of telly. The contestants actually draw you in to the point where you’re almost applauding along with the audience. Better yet, there’s less of the ‘freaky weirdo’ auditions and more focus on talent. And because it’s not all about mediocre singers, the variety element makes it much more interesting. Let’s face it, who wants to hear another flat version of Unchained Melody (it’s Simon’s favourite, don’tcha know?)

It might sound like a cliché, but Britain’s Got Talent will make you laugh, make you cry and make you cringe at some of the worse acts. Oh, and you should check out the ITV2 show, Britain’s Got More Talent. It takes a good look at some of the acts that you didn’t see, and gives you more info on the acts from the main show.

All in all, BGT is a total return to form. It’s not so close to the X Factor formula that it’s a copycat show. It’s a shame that it’s running during Big Brother season, because I think it could have a bigger audience in the winter schedules. And while you won’t be seeing any more musical theatre shows from Simon Cowell, you should hope that BGT returns for a second series.
