X Factor: Brian Friedman Is Glad Rachel Hylton Is Gone

X Factor choreographer, Brian Friedman has said that he is glad Rachel Hylton got the boot from the show last Saturday night.

MSN quote Friedman as saying:

"It was time for her to be eliminated. I definitely know that she was the bottom of the pack.

"Everyone kept giving her this pass, saying ‘we haven’t seen the best of you’. But she had been in the bottom too many times the public weren’t warming to her. If it had gone to deadlock she would still have gone."

After facing plenty of criticism for his stage shows and choreography from the judges so far, Brian has revealed that he just wants the chance to defend himself to the public.

Diana Vickers performed this song earlier in the series to rave reviews and other singers feel that the song was picked with Diana in mind to win the show.

X Factor: Why Is Dannii Minogue Crying?

As I watched Rachel Hylton perform Rule The World on X Factor tonight, the camera kept cutting across to shots of Dannii Minogue weeping.

Before Rachel came on stage, Dannii couldn’t introduce her because she was so upset and I’m not really sure why?

Louis Walsh did have a bit of a go at her about stealing JLS’ song, but really she should be used to him being a sniping little moan. She had first pick of songs, she chose the best song for her act, she did what she is being paid to do.

X Factor & Strictly: Should the judges voting be axed?

This weekend has seen the departure of two of the biggest characters in reality TV right now; Rachel Hylton and John Sargeant.

Rachel was pushed by the judges who – finally – voted her off while John voluntarily jumped, but the ironic thing is, while we the voting public were all studiously voting to keep the very likeable John in Strictly, many of us were equally studiously avoiding voting for the noxious Rachel. And while she was saved several times by the judges, poor John took the judges opinion into account over the public’s and left.

Fortunately, Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole finally recognised that given that Rachel had been in the bottom two no less than three times, it was probably a fair indicator of the fact that she isn’t liked by the public. They also wisely acknowledged that although Rachel can undoubtedly sing, her talent wasn’t enough to carry her through what is as much a popularity contest as one about talent, and that’s where Strictly came unglued over John.

Rachel Hylton Leaves X Factor 2008

Rachel Hylton- X factor 2008After being in the bottom two X Factor acts for the thrid time, Rachel Hylton got voted off the show tonight.

Once again Rachel found herself at the bottom tonight, this time joined by 4 piece boyband, JLS.

It seemed a cert that Rachel would go until JLS underperformed pretty badly and Rachel sang her heart out. I agree with Cheryl when she said it was Rachel’s best performance to date.

The Unreality TV X Factor Chart, Week 7

Can you believe that we’re more than halfway to the X Factor final for this year? Wow!

As you already know, tonight’s X Factor was themed around songs by Take That, so there was a range of classic British pop to choose from.  Now, if we can forget the phenomenal bickering between judges this evening, let’s try and work out who was the best act on tonight’s show:

  1. Alexandra Burke - Alexandra has established herself as a frontrunner in this year’s competition. She’s leapfrogged Diana in terms of performance, confidence and singing ability. Tonight’s performance (and show opener) has proved that she’s going to be a really slight pop star after this show.
  2. Ruth Lorenzo - Ruth normally reserves her best performances for when she’s in the sing-off, but tonight she gave a passionate rendition of Love Ain’t Here Anymore that got some good feedback from the judges. She still needs to deal with the poor diction when she’s singing softly, but otherwise a powerhouse performance.
  3. Eoghan Quigg - Eoghan’s confidence is growing week after week. We thought he’d stumble with the Take That song, but he put on a strong show on Never Forget.
  4. JLS - As we said earlier, Louis dresses these guys up in Westlife’s hand-me-downs. He’s trying to package quite a funky act as a traditional boyband, like a square peg in a round hole. While their performance wasn’t bad, they were outclassed by the three above this week.
  5. Diana Vickers and Rachel Hylton - Now, this one will be controversial. The former darling of the competition, Diana is joint bottom with Rachel who has been almost universally bad throughout the competition. For the second week in a row, Diana has tried to sing a song which doesn’t suit her distinctive vocal style. Rachel’s performance was a huge improvement, but was marred by her seeming to shout more than sing.

Well, that’s our verdict on tonight’s show - over to you for your opinions: are we right, or are we wrong? And who’s going to end up in the bottom two tonight?

If I can offer one more comment on Diana - she has a voice that people either love or hate. Unfortunately, when she tries to sing songs that don’t suit that singing style, it isn’t just bad, it’s horrible. I think this mostly comes down to song choice, but it’s very late in the competition, and I think Diana and Cheryl need to play it safe.

Rachel has suffered from exactly the same thing throughout this competition, which leads me to ask more questions about the format. Rachel has shown that she’s got ability, but the song choices (largely as a result of the themes each week) have limited how much she can show off her individuality. What a shame. And while they seem to be slowly starting to get it right, it may just be a case of too little too late.

The X Factor, Week 7 - Live Coverage

Welcome to Unreality TV’s live blog of the seventh X Factor live show.

And it’s Take That week! So, having watched that little bit of pre-recorded performance from the guys, we’re all ready to hear some classic pop tunes! First up, its…

Alexandra Burke

Alexandra opens the show tonight with a version of Relight My Fire. She’s looking hot and her version isn’t just a faithful copy of the original. Alex dances, struts confidently around the stage and gives a true diva performance. The judges are looking pretty impressed.

Louis: I loved the way that you didn’t just copy the original. I want you in the final. Dannii: You didn’t look like you warmed up until halfway through. Simon: I don’t think you’ve had enough credit for what a good performer you are. I just hope that people don’t think you’re safe. That was one of the best versions of that song I’ve ever heard. Cheryl: Alexandra, you are on fire tonight!

Louis interrupted Simon at one point during his comments to say that Alexandra is the best singer on X Factor since Leona Lewis. What do you think? Do they want to keep Alex in for the final?

Ruth Lorenzo

That sexy Spaniard Ruth is next up next with her version of Love Ain’t Here Anymore. My biggest criticism of Ruth is her diction - when she’s singing softly as she does at the start of this song, it’s very hard to understand what she’s saying. However, it does get better, and she manages to turn up the heat with an impressive vocal toward the end.

And did I mention, she looks yummy in that black dress?

That was another powerhouse performance. I can’t fault you at all. Cheryl: I just find you absolutely inspirational. Simon: I thought this was absolutely sensational. Your best performance to date by a mile.

JLS

Isn’t it funny when JLS are in the VT clips, they’re looking modern and funky, but when Louis and the stylists get their hands on them they look like they’re wearing Westlife’s cast-offs?

Another smooth performance from the boyband.

Dannii: I know there were a lot of song changes for you this week. I know you struggled a bit at the start, but you got into your stride by the end. Cheryl: I missed a bit of the chemistry between you guys tonight. Vocally that was the best performance you’ve ever done. Simon: You absolutely pulled it together, you looked like a group that’s been together for a long time. I hope you’ve done enough to get through to next week. Louis: I totally believe in the boys, and I think you’re the first band who could win X Factor.

Louis and Dannii break into a bit of a slanging match about song choices, with Louis accusing her of stealing Rule The World for her acts.

Rachel Hylton

Whoa - what was all that about? Dannii looked in tears at the start of this part of the show, and wasn’t even able to announce Rachel. That was weird and slightly upsetting! Louis must be on the warpath for those two tonight, because he complains in the VT that Rachel has absolutely no likeability. Ouch.

Rachel’s singing Rule The World, which isn’t the type of song you’d expect to work with her voice, but she’s remarkably good. It’s a nice arrangement, and Rachel’s good for the most part, although she does get quite shouty in places.

Louis: Great song choice. You looked happy tonight, which is really good. I think you’ve got a lot of soul. Cheryl: It’s nice to hear that softer side to your voice. I think you’re a soul singer, and I think that’s what you need to do more of in the competition. Simon: Other than the insane acrobatics, I thought it was a very good performance. Dannii: It was an amazing performance, I would never ever steal anyone else’s song.

Unbelievably, Rachel is mouthing “You alright?” to Dannii from the stage - Dannii is obviously really upset about the song stealing accusations.

Diana Vickers

Here comes our favourite. We’re all hoping that Diana gets back on form this week. Diana’s doing Patience, a fairly recent Take That song, and Gary Barlow is already hoping to poach her for his own new label!

She sounds a little drowned out in the mix tonight, and I wonder if she can hear herself. It starts off a bit weak in my opinion, but gets better toward the end. However, at this stage of the game, it looks like Alexandra might have overtaken Diana in the Under 25 girls category.

Louis: You made it your own, you didn’t just copy the original. Dannii: You looked the best you’ve ever looked this week. Simon: There were some kind of shaky moments in the song, but that’s what made it great. I absolutely adore you, I think you were given an impossible song tonight. Cheryl: I’m so glad that you’re back and that you’ve got your confidence back.

Eoghan Quigg

Eoghan is taking on one of Take That’s biggest songs this week - Never Forget. Oooh, he’s really working those camera angles tonight, ladies and gentlemen. He gets drowned out a little during the chorus by the choir - are they trying to mask those weak points? But no, he finishes brilliantly.

Louis: You have no fear, you’ve got everything going for you. You’re like FedEx - you always deliver. Dannii: Best performance of the night. Cheryl: A great close to the show. Simon: It was one of the best performance of the night - it was a brilliant choice of song, and most importantly it was believable. Tonight you proved you’re a pop star.

Cheryl Cole Says X Factor Is Not About The Judges

X Factor judge, Cheryl Cole has revealed that she is getting fed up at the amount of coverage of the X Factor judges and their supposed feuds when all eyes should really be on the talented contestants!

"This isn’t about me, Louis, whatever. No! None of the judges are going to win it. People don’t vote for the judges. They vote for their favourite contestant," she told The Mirror.

"Diana or Alexandra will win it, not us. We’re there to judge, to give advice, to build relationships with them."
