It has been reported today that former Celebrity Big Brother housemate Dee Kelly – who shot to fame after featuring in Channel 4’s controversial documentary series, Benefits Street – is about to turn thespian with a role in a production of Shakespeare’s classic, Hamlet.
We s**t you not.
According to The Sun, Dee will form part of the cast who are set to perform the iconic play at the Library of Birmingham this week, and while it’s not exactly the grandest of settings for The Bard’s works, nonetheless, the mere fact that Dee’s name is mentioned in reference to Shakespeare made us wonder if either hell had frozen over or it was April 1.
However, while it seems neither of those things apply, Dee may well have had Will spinning in his grave as she said, “I haven’t seen any of the original movies, I’ve seen the remakes.”
Oh dear God…
And in a This Just In confession, not, she added, “Hand on heart, I’ve never seen one of his plays, and I can’t say I was a fan of Shakespeare…
“I’m not an expert, but you don’t have to be an expert to appreciate something, and to like it.”
And in what we hope was a joke, of Shakespeare, she added, “He’s from outside Birmingham anyway, but even if he wasn’t, I’m a bigger star than him, aren’t I?”
Sadly, she may well in fact be spot on there.
Meanwhile, Dee is currently working on – and this is about as shocking and unlikely as hearing that she’s landed a role in Hamlet – her own fitness DVD, despite the fact that she still smokes and is still overweight.
But of those issues, she remarked, “Since Benefits Street I’ve lost over 5stone. I’ve gone down three dress sizes.”
However, she conceded, “It’s a work in progress.”
But despite the intimation in all of the above as to my opinion of Dee, I have to applaud her for picking up the (albeit dubiously acquired) fame ball and running hell for leather with it…
After all, she’s now surely looking at a fairly nice bank balance, while as far as we’re aware, the rest of her James Turner Street neighbours are still most likely busy claiming benefits and generally speaking, doing sweet FA, Dee is now earning her own living. And as mentioned, for that, she does deserve plaudits.
