Celebrity Big Brother For Oldies?

The Sun have published an article today, claiming that Big Brother bosses are worried the show is now attracting a more mature audience than they would like.

As the Big Brother brand moves into it’s tenth year on Channel 4, the audience who loved it at its conception are now a decade older and want different things from the show than the generation coming up behind them.

Reports suggest that young people are tuning out in their droves from the new celebrity version of the show, bored by older housemates like Tommy Sheridan and La Toya Jackson. I don’t know what it says about me that these are two of my favourite housemates from this years lineup.

Long gone are the days when the show was sponsored by cutting edge mobile phone companies, now each edition is accompanied by an ad for ‘Dreams’ the bed company. How many 18 year olds you know are out shopping for a fancy new bed?

So should Big Brother change their format to appeal to younger viewers? Should they start hiring groups of blonde plastic porn stars and crazy gay men to entertain college students or should they play to their loyal but more mature fans who obviously feel some sort of connection to the format?

As a woman at the ripe old age of 32 I have enjoyed this celebrity series more than any in the last 2-3 years. I like that there have been no gimmicks, no ‘evil’ Big Brother games, just stupid costumes and hilarious tasks. Conflict has arisen naturally and was not prodded on by producers and the show seems more natural as a result.

I think the producers have hit the nail directly on the head this time round, but obviously my views are not shared by the teenagers amongst you who have lost interest in the series. We would love to hear what you think of this years BB series, what they got right, what they should change and most importantly what age you are! As always, leave your comments below.
