Celebrity Big Brother: OFCOM Receive More Than 200 Racism Complaints Regarding Shilpa Shetty
OFCOM have revealed that they have received more then 200 complaints against alleged racist remarks and attitudes displayed against Shilpa Shetty in the Big Brother house.
Here at Unreality TV we pointed out some of the housemates racist attitudes on our forum almost a week ago, and we have also given our opinion on the bullying of Shilpa Shetty by Danielle Lloyd and Jade Goody.
The treatment of Shilpa in the Celebrity Big Brother house has often been horrendous. Jackiey started the trend by constantly speaking down to Shilpa and by calling her “Indian”. Not one other housemate who heard Jackiey using this term told her it was unacceptable.
Danielle, Jade and even Jo have continued where Jackiey left off, often bitching about Shilpa, using every excuse to snipe at and criticise her. Over the weekend, former beauty queen Danielle Lloyd and ex-S Club 7 star Jo O’Meara poked fun at Shilpa’s accent. Yet not one has been able to give a justifiable reason for their grudge against the Bollywood beauty.
Other housemates have noticed the treatment that Shilpa has been receiving, ex-Steps star Ian claimed: “It’s turning into that film - Lord Of The Flies.”
“Were they bullying Shilpa last night?” asked Jermaine Jackson today.
“Yeah,” Ian replied. “I’m not playing those games. I’m not going to be part of it.”
OFCOM are currently wading through the complaints that continue to bombard them. An Ofcom spokeswoman said: “We have had approximately 200 complaints of racism.
“Quite a lot of websites have been discussing the issue and urging people to get in contact with us. We will look into each individual complaint.”
I hope that this whole episode will spell the end of both Jade’s and Danielle’s celebrity careers, they are a pair of venomous young women, with no backbone or individuality. They are the Big Brother equivalent of the school yard bullies. Jo I think has fallen in with the wrong crowd. She often realises that things have gone too far, and she certainly thought that Danielle had been excessive in her treatment of Shilpa last Friday, but so far Jo has been unable to speak out against Jade or Danielle. If she remains affiliated with the pair, they will be her downfall.

It makes me sick to see her being treated so badly. I hope the complaint is upheld against her. She is my favourite housemate and I can’t understand why the younger girls don’t like her. Perhaps it jealousy. The way its coming across looks like racism. Something needs to be done to stop it now!

I am ashamed and upset on how our bollywood actress is treated here in England, Big Brother or no Big Brother. I am totally disgusted. The racism is appalling how cod u air such things and expect the Indian viewers not to be upset. The racist remarks are appalling and the jealousy shows. The curry remark is very racist. She is the most watched and liked person in bb and the entire Indian household watch it because of her. This needs to be stopped. Jade and Daniel shod be evicted. She’s very intelligent and stunning women. Shilpa deserves to win.

Yes what’s going on makes me feel sick, but sadly people complaining to Ofcom have got it wrong - the Channel4 producers are probably loving it as they think a bit of controversy will boost the show’s flagging ratings.
If you want to do something effective, take a leaf out of what happens in the US. When people see something they don’t like on TV the usual tactic that gets results is to target the advertisers.
You watch how fast the Endemol producers put on an Indian cultural awareness evening for the housemates, once people start writing to the main show sponsor, the carphone warehouse, telling them that they will start shopping for their mobile phones elsewhere!

Shilpa is stunning and is showing a characteristics of a good and pragmatic person. Her patience and tolerance fetches her attention and reflects personality. Though she is a victim of racism as it can be clearly seen, she still behaves well with all of them. I fully agree with nana poku from the business point of view, but the catch is it invokes the sentiments of the asian people living in britain who see this every now and then. Some good initiative should be taken to stop this.
She is representing a country and that increases her tolerance, else who cares who is jade or danielle, she has a huge fan in india itself, that she doesnt need any more publicity.

I fully agree with u, because of few of the people the whole white community is blamed and it creates a ever lasting impression when indian viewers watch this clearly. Not to forget that after the independence it was a long gap to bridge the racism, and Big brother created a platform where treating equally could have soothed the sentiments and have reflected that all people are not the same (time has changed and so as the people) but what can be reflected is only the british community has done racism (jade, jackie, jo, danielle) why not the american people (dirk is there jermain is there)..

OFCOM will not do anything about this complaint, unless Shilpa complains herself it will be one of the many complains about racism that this programme has generated and has never dealt with.
The BB contract states if you do or say anything that offends other housemates OR THE PUBLIC you may be ejected, but the producers obviously do not find racism offensive and would not eject anyone for racism, infact I think it is a requirement in the contract.
What will happen eventually is the producers will state
” life in the house brings out behaviour in certain individuals such as partisan views, which is part of the programme”
BB still have not dealt with racism complaints of the last series , so I cant see this amounting to nothing.
After the show ends they will give Shilpa even more money to keep her sweet, she will go back to India and the racism will all be forgotten.
I had the misfortune to watch shabbaz ( irritating as he was) being ganged up by a set of sociopathic bigots when I was in the BB house, and I was excluded for the group with the aid of the producers intervention, who thrive on seeing certain people crying or being treated like lepers.
No racism complaint has ever been upheld by OFCOM against Big Brother yet or any complaint in general, so I cant see this one amounting to much , but viewers should complain to OFCOM if they feel it will do some good.
Remember it was the BB producers who picked the mentallly fragile self proclaimed “Paki Poofter without a corner shop” to walk around exposing himself for the enjoyment of the other housemates to go on the show, so that should give you an idea how the producers actually think.
I hope they are paying Shilpa as much as it is rumoured.

The only way we can react to the racist attack on Shilpa Shetty is by not watching CBB. This will have an impact on C4 ratings and their advertising/sponsorship revenue as I’m sure Carphone Warehouse will not support a programme that associates itself with racism and bullying.

The producers can intervene at anytime they want to as it states they can in the contract.
So obviously they dont want to.
If the producers just wanted an Asian person insulted on BB yet again, did they have to go all that way to India and pay so much money for Shilpa.
Shabbaz would have done it for free, the downside it is Shabbaz and he would need in house psychiatrist when it got too painful.
Yet another contraversional racism strand, how do the producers keep it so so fresh with the ideas eh ?. I believe they have had a “racism topic” on every BB, so they all must be cakin it.
BB will be remembered as the SKID MARK of British Television. Well done to everyone involved with the programme

Good idea, Dawn, bring Nikki back. It would liven up BB considerably. Farrah your comment is offensively racist about Danielle. What about all Shilpa and Jermaine have been saying about the rest of the house being beneath their class and how could they live with these loud voices, they would rather walk. Shilpa has been abusive to many of her housemates even when they have tried to make her feel welcome and tried to clear the air eg Jade on many occassions e.g. the patronising story. I really like both Danielle and Jade and think Shilpa has brought everything on herself by her nastiness and looking down on her housemates and then running and stirring up trouble by twisting the stories when repeating them to Jermaine, Dirk, Ian and Chleo eg Jade said she was shocked at how quickly Shilpa put her hand up to vote against Carole who she had been hugging and saying how much she loved her, just before the vote. She told everyone that Jade had been angry because she voted. I could write a book on all that Shilpa has said to cause trouble in the house. She is very self centred and wants everyone to look up to her all the time. SHe IS very beautiful on the outside but not so where it counts, inside. What is wrong with being called what you are. She is Indian and should be proud to be called so. If someone said French if she was French, would there be such an uproar? Shilpa and Jermaines remarks about their housemates have been far worse than anything anyone has said about them.

PS Shilpa is an actress and can turn the tears on at a drop of a hatpin, which she does whenever in a tight spot, mostly well deserved.
Danielle is a lovely, vibrant little scatterbrain who gets upset with Shilpa as quickly as she forgives her. She loves Shilpa but hates some of her actions e.g. her continuous meaness to the Goody family and especially towards Jade who she looks down on and who we have all loved and admired for a long time. The housemates are also frustrated by Shilpa’s wanting to control everything and everyone.

Why not Bring Nikki, Chantelle and Kate all back they are all vibrant little fire crackers and they are so photogenic, not only will the place be more lively , but it will also be much prettier to look at too.
I would not mind going back to the BB house and being a sort of slave “mammie ” to all the lovely anglo-saxon women, I would even do without clothes again, just for the privilege of being in their anglo-saxon presence. In my opinion Nikki, Jade, Danielle, Jo and Chantelle etc are perfect in everyway and make me feel ashamed to not be white.

How can anyone say that Jade and her witches are misunderstood or have any redeeming qualities.
I am disgusted about the treatment of Shilpa and I am disgusted that anyone would take Jade’s side.
On a website it says the the whole world is now talking about BB and its racism/bullying of Shilpa and there have been over 2000 complaints in this country via a petition and still rising.
The only way for BB to redeem its self is to gather the housemates in the lounge and broadcast on loud speakers for us all to hear that ‘Jade, Jack, Danni and Jo are now evicted because of rasicm and bullying. Please leave the house now. You will not receive your fee and you will not be interviewed’.
The problem with this is that there will be no one there to boo them and that is what I want to see.

PPS The complaints have topped those of Nikki going back in the BB house. BB only had to pay £40, 000 for that, so I cant see them being too upset about the recent racism row.Lets see if the complaints make the 5000 figure mark.

Just close your eyes and think of Nikki and all the fuss about nothing will soon blow over.
As we know its good PR for the programme and people who werent watching will know watch, as its been a bit rubbishy and lack lustre up to now. Its about time someone non anglo won BB ( and no the transgender from portugal is not black or asian) and if shilpa wins it will make up for the Shabbaz fiasco and will be a first for BB.

Why was Jade the figurehead of an anti Bullying charity in the first place. Its not really fair to drop Jade as they capitalised on a no mark in the first place as opposed to gettin someone better.
How silly people will believe the hype and make heros out of the likes of Pete and Jade and then tear them down for being no marks.
I dont remember Jade being a particular caring or protective person. Its like having a lion being the figurehead of the vegetarian society and castigating him cos you find out later he’s eating meat.

The behaviour of these 3 girls especially D######e and J##e is as revolting as it is predictable. Put a couple of silly pig ignorant nasty little girls in a closed space with a beautiful, sophisticated, and intelligent foreign lady; and the ignorance and jealousy will come to the boil. D######e seems to be especially nasty when you consider her obvious cowardly nature. That little turd Jack is just a waste of air, if I ever bumped into him in the street i’d be very proud of myself if I didn’t leave him wherever I found him.
Shilpa’s handled herself brilliantly and has remained dignified throughout. Its just a shame she wants to marry an Indian and not an Irishman.

I think this whole Shilpa Shetty issue is discriminatory, and the views of her within the house expressed by Jo, Jade and Danielle are dogmatic and disgusting. These girls obviously don’t have a clue about education or are mentally thick and unable to understand anothers culture. I think a programme like this just expresses the problem of covert racism within this country and shows white people in a bad light which is unfair on them. I also think that a programme like this will spurn the idiots who are racist pigs within this country on, and will affiliate their views which have now been ‘celebrity endorsed’. As a student of Psychology it is clear to me that the three girls who are expressing these views within the house obviously and clearly have some kind of prejudice against indians in general. Whether it is due to their socialisation or their dogmaticness is open to debate, and whether they feel the same towards British Asians is another topic for consideration. Also Jo is an idiot because I’m sure every time she visits a curry house and eats a curry it is an indian who is cooking it for her. So next time luv, if you don’t trust an indian persons cooking, then don’t go to a curry house. it wouldnt be one of the nations favourite dishes for no reason.

Please don’t assume that all white people are racist. I have an indian friend who is lovely and respectable and we are very similar in our outlook about life and our values are the same. She always says to me ‘are you sure you are not hindu’ as a joke.
I am appauled and so are many many white british people. I just want to go into that house and give her a massive hug and tell her that she is doing brilliantly and she will become an even huger star than she is already. The whole world is now reporting on this - USA, Australia, Asia - everywhere. Jade will probably never get any work again. So who is the real winner.

I would have prefered to use the word “Goons” myself, it has a harder edge.

PS I hope to God BB producers dont bring rambling Shabbaz in the studio to talk about racism in the Big Brother House or Derek or Shabbaz or Derek or Shabbaz or Derek or Shabbaz and come to think of it Science. He is ok , but inarticulate. Not Derek , but please by the power of He - man and the masters of the universe dont brink shabbaz in the studio.
I guess this means the producers will be bringing Shabbaz in to talk about racism. I’m glad channel five show CSI’s in the evening, cos that’s what I will be watching.
Why dont OFCOM tell the public that they can only do an indepth investigation if Shilpa complains herself or she gives someone her authority to complain on her behalf. Otherwise people are wasting their time.The producers know they are not breaking the broadcast rules, that’s why they havent kicked anyone out.
The figure has now risen to 10,000 complaints to OFCOM says channel 5 news, but everyone will get the same letter in six months time.

Shilpa has made us Indians proud especially among those 4 other haggard ladies (I am sorry to say so) - one who is all dazed on her hedgy hais??, the 2nd one who can’t control being naked on camera (one who can’t handle herself, how can she handle anything else, and the 3rd old haggard who looks like a beggar and talks of not giving any indian a present?? Torn clothes, creature from mars, standing somewhere between a man and a woman, let her 1st decde which side of the world population is she— male or female….. and they say they are frank?? I am not blaming all whites– I have white friends— very good people but lets agree…..blacks are the people who have made their name in all arts fild in UK and US and indians and asians are the one who had led them in scientific and medical fields….. so whats the pride and inequality all about and who should feel unequal?? Shilpa is a bigger star than all of them put together and India produces more movies in a month than UK in an year… White is good but afterall its a deficiency of Melanin… so what inequality treatment just because one is deficient in a body pigmentand other has slightly more (Though I feel Shilpa is fairer to them?? Wish those ladies all the God’s punishment and worst in life and may their careers be doomed after this show…. God if only they had some brains along with their proud skins????

I honestly cannot see anything racist in this whole thing. It is simply wanting to win BB and using anything at hand to do so. Be fair, Shilpa could have been nicer from daY ONE when she and Jermaine ran the Goody family down for being loud saying they wanted to leave the house and it has nevr stopped, this Shilpa attack on Jade. It is more racist to condemn those girls for behaving as all people in BB have behaved to win. I think Shilpa and Jermane have said far worse things than the three girls have e.g. they are below our class and many such remarks. Why ae we still making such a fuss of colour, what difference does colour make it is what the person is inside. It is time we all forgot colour and accepted each other as people.

Thank you Dawn for your jesting offers but I am a happily married woman with three wonderful sons. My only interest in the Nikki’s and other young girls would be the daughters I have never had although I have had many foster daughters and sons passing through our home as we are an emergency place of safety until such time that the children can be placed and yes, they are all chilren, irrespective of colour as we dont even think colour. They are just precious little people in need.

Evelyn Lewis you said it, you see the white girls as the daughters you never had, and it makes you blind to their behaviour, they can do no wrong it your eyes.
Nikki was a complete bigotted self -obessed spoilt git, but you dont care as she could have physically dropped out of your womb as Jade, danielle, jo etc could.
If I had a daughter like Jade she would have been growing up with Tracy Beaker.
Shilpa and Jermaine obviously couldnt have dropped out of your bod, with their darkie genes, so you dont have that psychological attachment to them.

When X factor was on there were some people saying that it was racist because certain acts were being voted off and Leona would not win.
In that occasion I really thought that it was not racist and I still believe that.
This is a different matter - Shilpa is being picked on for even breathing and its bad enough when one person does it but when it is a pack it is absolutely bullying and absolutely racist. Take your blinkers off and see. Us the public are really seeing all of it and the fact that Ian has come into the diary and said what he said proves that it must be horrid living in that house.
Some people say she should leave but why. Why should bullies and racists win. I hope she sticks it out and I hope after this experience she will become so icon because she truly deserves it. India people must be very proud of her, I am proud of her for just for being a strong, sweet, dignified woman who will win in the end.

BB producers did state that Black and Asian people never win and have gone out to prove that it is not possible in the last few years.
Shilpa has a huge fan base, so she is different to the average darkie on BB.
I think if she was an unknown she would not have had the support and people would have sided with the white girls as evelyn has done.
People shouldnt be fooled by this tactic and spend all their money voting to get her to win. when I was in BB house I witnessed and saw worse racism, but it wasnt the agenda to highlight it at that time , so it wasnt broadcast.
After the Nikki fiasco people have been reluctant to vote, creating this tension will make people vote people out or in their droves.
Putting more money back into the BB community chest. the best thing people can do is not vote for anyone either way and discuss what the purposes of BB is , when all these celebs come ou.

Seriously, there are riots in the streets in India. This is beyond a joke.
Endemol if there ever is a big brother again don’t chose the winner yourself and then do everything you can to protect them and edit them so they win. It really is all about money and nothing else. It doesnt matter about people or their lives or their reputation. Please everyone smell the coffee.
