Davina McCall admits “I’ve done some awful TV” but adds, “I’ve done some that I’m fiercely proud of!”
Veteran TV presenter Davina McCall has of course been on our screens for just over 20 years, having begun her career in telly on MTV in 1992…
So inevitably, there have been some shows that she’s presented that she’s less than proud of, but equally, many that she is, in her own words, “fiercely proud of.”
Davina – who became a household name when she fronted Big Brother on Channel 4 from 2000 to its final outing on C4 in 2010 – made the comments about her career during an interview with Saturday Magazine.
She said, “I’m very much of the mind that you will front some awful rubbish and if it doesn’t work out, you just dust yourself off and try again.
“I’ve been on telly for 20 years and I’ve done some awful TV and I’ve done some TV that I am fiercely proud of.”
Davina actually started out her career as a singer, and when she was aged 19, her then boyfriend Eric Clapton helped her to make her first demo-disc, however, she later became disheartened by rejections and instead, opened a restaurant before becoming a Moulin Rouge style cabaret performer in Paris.
Later still, she returned to the UK and began work as a dancer, starring in the video for the 1991 Kylie Minogue single Word Is Out. As mentioned above, in 1992 Davina, was hired as a presenter on Ray Cokes’ Most Wanted on MTV Europe then in 1995, she went on to host the ITV late night game show God’s Gift.
In 1998, Davina presented cult Channel 4 dating show Streetmate as well as Sky TV’s show Prickly Heat with Julian Clary. She also hosted ITV game show Don’t Try This at Home before eventually going on to host Big Brother.
