Should Michael Barrymore be back for Celebrity Big Brother 2009?
Terry Lubbock, the father of Stuart Lubbock who died at Michael Barrymore’s home in 2001, has blasted Channel 4 bosses for employing comedian Michael Barrymore as a roving reporter for this year’s Celebrity Big Brother.
Terry, 65, has never given up his pursuit of the truth about what happened to his son at Barrymore’s house and is furious that Barrymore is being employed by BB bosses again. So much so that according to the Daily Mail, Terry intends to stage a protest outside the show’s studios.
He told the newspaper, “I will be outside the studios the day it starts – I will not rest until I know what happened to my son and I want Mr Barrymore to tell me all he knows.
“Reporters are people who want information revealed. Now that Mr Barrymore is a reporter maybe he can reveal some information to me.
“I’ll be happy to be interviewed by him any time – and I’ll have some questions for him.”
Here’s an excerpt from the Daily Mail’s report regarding Barrymore’s arrest and subsequent release regarding Stuart’s death.
“A cloud remained over Michael Barrymore last night even after he was told he will not be prosecuted over the death of a party guest at his home.
As Barrymore walked free, detectives revealed that they are convinced that Stuart Lubbock was attacked before he drowned in the entertainer’s swimming pool in March 2001.
The extraordinary public statement by Essex Police came as officers admitted there was insufficient evidence to bring any charges against Barrymore or two other men arrested on suspicion of murder and sexual assault.
Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Wilson said: ‘I want to make it very clear that this is not the end of the investigation.’
He said 31-year-old Mr Lubbock ‘received very serious injuries the night he died’ and evidence suggested they occurred at Barrymore’s mansion in Roydon, in Essex.”
Since that time, Barrymore has appeared on Celebrity Big Brother as a housemate which, at the time, caused controversy with many believing that until the truth regarding Stuart Lubbock’s death was known, Michael should not be on our screens.
But what do you think?
There has not been any conclusive proof that Barrymore was involved in Stuart’s death but rumours have continued to dog the comedian. Some social commentators at the time – and since – have hinted at comparisons between Barrymore’s situation and OJ Simpson infamously being found not guilty for his wife and her lover’s murder, but is that a fair comparison or not?
Terry Lubbock it seems certainly thinks so and he has spent the last 7 years keeping his son’s death a high profile one by often appearing wherever Barrymore does. For instance, in July this year, Terry was outside Barrymore’s Edinburgh Fringe show with a diagram of Stuart’s injuries as noted at his post-mortem.
In the past though, Terry has said that he’s prepared to accept that Barrymore may not have been actively involved on the suspected attack on his son, but he does believe that Michael knows more than he’s saying about Stuart’s death, and it is for this reason that he is enraged that Michael will be on our screens again in the New Year.
I have to say, I just don’t know what to think; I waiver between thinking that at the very least, Barrymore must have been aware of what was going on under his roof during the time Stuart Lubbock sustained the injuries that culminated in his drowning in Barrymore’s pool. On the other hand, it’s not like Michael Barrymore lived in a two-up-two-down; his home was a large property in extensive grounds so it is conceivable that Stuart could have been assaulted by other guests at Michael’s house without his knowledge.
And of course, innocent until proven guilty still applies so one the one hand, why should Barrymore give up his career if he really didn’t have anything to do with – or any knowledge of – Stuart’s death?
Equally, for those who believe he did have some involvement, either directly or indirectly, it’s understandable that they are enraged that Michael is still a high profile TV personality; it must feel like rubbing salt into a very raw wound.
What do you think? Should Michael Barrymore continue his career or should he bow out of public life until the mystery surrounding Stuart’s death is resolved?
