‘Dancing On Ice’ Sunday 17th January – Liveblog

Dancing On Ice returns to our screens tonight and this time it’s the mens turn to skate!

Last week we saw Sinitta being (we thought unfairly) voted off and we can’t wait to see if it’s Dr Hilary’s turn tonight.

We’ll be here the whole way through tonight’s show, giving our opinions and views on each performance and on the judges comments. We’d love to hear what you think too so make sure to leave your comments below or drop us a line on our Twitter page, the best tweets will make it onto our liveblog post!

The testosterone-fuelled evening begins with Christopher Dean taking the male professional skaters through a manly routine. Well, as manly as one can look in a Dancing On Ice costume. Jayne Torvill spends her time being thrown from man to man, and she looks quite tiny as they use her as a pendulum.

Holly Willoughby looks ravishing in a green dress – an unusual colour choice, but classy as always. Oh, the conversations I have with Holly in my head…

Gary Lucy

Former Hollyoaks and The Bill actor Gary seems to be quite accomplished on the ice. He’s partnered with Maria, but aside from being a confident skater, he claims to have no idea how to dance. Still, Gary’s a good-looking guy so he might be guaranteed the phone votes even if he is a poor dancer!

Their routine – danced to Free’s All Right Now – is good, but rather slow and deliberate. A good start for Gary Lucy.

Score: Gary and Maria receive a total of 17.5 from the judges. Jason: It was all right now…and then. You were almost borderline dull. Watch your free arm, because there’s no life or energy in it. There were, however, moments of grace. Karen: A lot of it’s right, become a little more showbiz and give the presentation Jason’s looking for.

Hilary Jones

GMTV doctor Hilary Jones is partnered with Alexandra – he’s the most fearful of the skaters, unsure of himself on the ice and quite accident prone. After watching the female rounds last week, he’s been inspired to try harder and overcome his fear of the ice. As we kind of expected, it’s a rather tentative routine – Hilary’s movements are quite cautious, but credit must be given for the attempt! I hope he gets a chance to develop his skating.

Score: Hilary and Alexandra get a total score of 11.5. There’s a lot of talk about Hilary’s age and how it might affect him in the competition. Nicky: [[My score]] reflects your lack of confidence and ability to skate. I still think you’ve accomplished a lot for your first week. Emma: I think it’s very brave of you. Your posture wasn’t great and you need to support your partner a lot more.

Danny Young

A former Baldwin on Coronation Street, Danny claims to have been skating “3 or 4 times in my life”. Danny almost gets his face sliced off by his partner Frankie in practise, which looks very dangerous. After watching what Sinitta did last week to a pair of trousers, I’d be very afraid! Skating to Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, Danny’s unexpectedly good, not quite as polished as you might expect, but showed what the judges will saw is a lot of promise.

Score: 18.0 is the total score awarded by the judges – the best score of the night so far. Emma: I thought you were feisty, your were exciting and flirty. I couldn’t take my eyes off you – I’m not sure if that was the muscles or the performance. Jason: There were moments where there was great energy and enthusiasm, and there were moments when it was like Frodo on steroids. You’ve just gotta watch – sometimes you have infantile arms. You had great partnering, but with a bit more practice I think you could be Lord of your Ring.

Bobby Davro

This big grinning eejit/comedian is clearly the clown of this year’s show. He’s balancing his skating practice with a stint in panto. Oh dear. He’s got the Todd Carty stance, which is a bad sign from the start. When Davro hits the ice, he’s far better than you might expect, although his partner Molly does 70% of the work in this routine. There are a few wobbles, of course, but nobody fell over. And that’s the main thing…

Score: Davro gets a 10.5 on his first time out on the ice. He tells Phillip Schofield that now his panto is over, he’ll dedicate more time to practising if he gets through. Nicky: The skating skills need development, but the entertainment – you had me smiling from ear to ear throughout. Jason: I thought you were going to be dreadful, and you were. Technically, a lot of problems there. You had hands like a Mickey Mouse watch. I think what we have here is a great showman.

Kieron Richardson

Kieron drafts in his Hollyoaks mate and former Dancing On Ice contestant, Chris Fountain. Chris gives him a bit of coaching and this seems to help with his confidence. Ohh, who did Kieron piss of in the Dancing On Ice wardrobe department to get that dayglo pink top?

Dancing to Beat Again by JLS, Kieron and his partner manage a very slick routine, although my eyes were glued to that rather hot young woman for most of it! Will this be a high scoring performance?

Score: The judges award Kieron a total score of 17.5. Christopher Dean describes him as a “dark horse” of the competition. Jason: OK, good energy. I think a lot of your physical interpretation and positions were very sloppy and throwaway. However, you will progress if you stick around. Nicky: I saw you doing moves that linked and didn’t have gaps between them. The overall routine fitted together for me, you worked as a couple and that’s why for me it’s a 4.5.

Jeremy Sheffield

Jeremy kindly explains that he’s an actor from Holby City – which is good, because I’ve never heard of him. Jeremy has a background in ballet, but that was over a decade ago. We seem him straining a hamstring in rehearsals, which puts him off the ice for three weeks and leaving a lot of catching up to do with the other contestants.

Skating to It’s A Man’s Man’s World by James Brown, Jeremy’s posture seems good, but he’s not moving much on the ice. For what it is, the routine is reasonably graceful, but was somewhat stilted.

Score: The judges award a total score of 12.5, which is pretty poor. Robin: What it needs is passion and drama to go with it. You made everybody else look like speed demons – it was very slow and laboured in places. Emma: You look so gorgeous, your body’s amazing. I thought your lines were beautiful. Karen: It was slow, it was cautious.

Mikey Graham

The Boyzone star is the last skater to hit the ice tonight, and we have no idea what to expect – although he seems to have dubbed himself “The Ice Man” – self-praise being the best sort of recommendation. He introduces himself “I’m MIkey Graham and I’m a member of the band Boyzone” just as if he was attending an AA meeting.

A very confident routine is marred only slightly by a stumble toward the end, but he still manages a cartwheel at the end.

Score: Mikey gets a total score of 16 from the judges. He acknowledges the stumbles, but says he’s happy enough with his skating. Jason: It was a shame about the slips. I don’t think that you didn’t bounce back from those slips. Good choreographic interpretation – keep your head up though. Emma: I know how difficult it is working with a band and having to do something on your own. The moonwalk was strong, it was a shame about that slip. Robin: I’m very excited about how you’ll progress in the weeks to come.

Well, that’s it until the results show at 9:30 – in the meantime, tell us who your favourite skater of the night. And whose costume was the most hideous (hint: Kieron).

Pssst! If you want to chat more about tonight’s show, pop on over to our Dancing On Ice forum and have a chat about each performer!

Quick update – Gary Lucy and Bobby Davro ended up in the bottom two. They entered the skate-off together, but the judges unanimously chose to save Gary, therefore Bobby is eliminated.
