Dancing On Ice 2010: professional skaters may go on strike
Dancing On Ice bosses are reportedly worried that tonight’s show may not go ahead, after their professional skaters threatened to go on strike.
The skaters are said to be angry at their low pay and restrictive contracts and have threatened to strike if their conditions aren’t revised.
A source told The News Of The World: “At one stage it looked like there would be no show at all last week. We need to sort out the problem or it could go down to the wire again tonight. There are all sorts of issues that need to be resolved. Not just money, but also recognition.
“There are spin-off computer games and DVDs coming out over which the skaters feel they are being ignored.
“The pros don’t want to strike and spoil things for viewers, but it’s a mess and needs sorting.”
The newest additions to the skating team, Brianne Delcourt, Matthew Gonzalez, Molly Moenkhoff and Alexandra Schumann – are reportedly earning just £9,000 for the current series. Other pros like Daniel Whiston are believed to be earning around £20,000.
A spokesman said: “Dancing On Ice is a great opportunity for pro skaters. Producers will look very closely at the Winter Olympics next week for new faces.”
