Dancing On Ice 2012: Chemmy Alcott wants to compete in one last winter Olympics
Chemmy Alcott has revealed that she hopes to compete in one more winter Olympics, before she hangs up her skis.
The 29 year old skier shattered bones in her legs in an accident in Canada in 2010 and thought she would never compete professionally again. However she has revealed that rehearsing for ITV’s Dancing On Ice has led to some of the feeling in her leg returning and she is now hopeful that she will be able to return to the sport that she loves.
Chemmy told The Sun that she struggled at first during practice sessions with Sean Rice, because her legs wouldn’t do what she needed. She explained:
“The first time I got on the skates, it took me 40 minutes to find my ‘inside edge’ because the brain-to-leg nerves were severed in my accident.
“I’ve got all this metal in my right leg and the skating is giving me the chance to get that brain pattern working before I hit the slopes. If it took me that long to ‘communicate’ downhill, it could be a disaster.”
The blonde beauty – who greatly impressed the judges on the first episode of the ITV series last week, said that she will now work towards competing in the 2014 winter Olympics, adding:
“I want to do Russia in 2014. This is the best preparation. The fitness and the feeling you get on the ice — if I can do this on a tiny blade then hopefully I can transfer it to a wide ski.”
For her Dancing On Ice debut, Chemmy and Sean skated to ‘Raise Your Glass’ by Pink, and won high praise from head judge Robin Cousins. After the quick paced routine Robin praised the pair saying:
You had such power and speed on the ice, and Sean had to keep up with you! You performed as if it’s in your blood and as if you do it every day. It was fantastic.
Chemmy and Sean will perform again this Sunday.
