In his heyday Dancing On Ice star and TV presenter Keith Chegwin was like s*** in a cow field; you simply couldn’t avoid him…
However, his career and personal life took a nose dive in the nineties, and he became a professional boozer who would even drink mouthwash in order to get drunk!
Keith made the startling confession while speaking to The Sun about how much better his life is now that he’s been sober for the last 20 years, and about how is career in on the mend too.
He explained that the turning point in his self-destructive way of life came during an interview with Richard and Judy in 1992…
He said, “It was November 5, 1992. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I was an alcoholic. I enjoyed it.
“I just got on to a hamster wheel and couldn’t get off it. I was drinking anything and everything — Plax, Night Nurse, the lot.
“Night Nurse is expensive… if you’re drinking three bottles a day.”
Keith added, “I thought about stopping but I couldn’t.
“It was like trying to jump Becher’s Brook on a Shetland pony, it was just too big to get over.”
However, Keith added that he managed to kick the drink by going to rehab clinics and cutting himself off from his family and friends for a while.
He said, “I admitted I was an alcoholic and then I joined Big Breakfast and went on the road.
“I’d be sitting in a hotel room at 3am looking at the minibar and going, ‘Oh, God’.
“But I got that sorted. My partner would ring up the hotel beforehand and get the minibar emptied.”
However, Keith went on to say that he’s still tempted by the booze sometimes.
He said, “I wonder what it would be like to have a lager in the summer.
“People have been sympathetic and The Sun were very good to me.”
He continued, “The business is cleaner these days. In the old days, it would be the norm to have a drink after doing something but now people are more motivated by their careers.
“There’s no parties like there used to be. That’s all disappeared.
“All this Dancing On Ice lot go to the hotel and are all drinking water.
“And it’s not frowned on.”
Finally, of taking part in Dancing On Ice this year – and of his having to pull out of the show last year due to injury – Keith said, “As soon as I got on the ice, Jayne Torvill and Chris Dean asked me to go as fast as I can.
“Jayne normally does 14mph — they were clocking me at 15mph. Then I thought, ‘oh s***, I’ve got to go left’ and I couldn’t.
“So I cracked my shoulder in three places. I couldn’t come back after that. It was too painful.”
And of his participation this year, Keith said, “My partner Olga Sharutenko is very tough on me. I call her the Gremlin from the Kremlin. She’s like an Olympian.
“She’s so dedicated to making sure I look my best. On the night I thought if Pamela [Anderson] skated well then people would go for her.
“But to my surprise the judges were just judging us on our skating ability. They didn’t care that it was Cheggers in his Lycra or Pamela Anderson falling out of hers.
“I was sad to see her go but it’s a competition. It’s about the skating.”
Here’s a reminder of one of Keith’s recent DOI routines…
