Dancing On Ice returned for it’s fifth episode of the series this evening, and the new task really did sort the wheat from the chaff.
Tonight, the celebrities took on The Leveller and were each required to skate alone for thirty seconds of their routine. Samia Smith had previously shone and topped the leaderboard, but tonight she was close to useless without her partner Sylvain Longchambon, while Joe Pasquale’s lack of skills and grace was highlighted more than usual.
In contrast, stars such as Gareth Thomas and Matt Lapinskas could not have been stronger and displayed the fact that they are strong and competent skaters both with and without their partners.
On the results show which followed the main episode, Phillip Schofield revealed that despite her shaky Bambi like performance, Samia had been voted through to the next round, while Shayne Ward and Matt faced the skate off, despite their good marks and positive comments from the panel.
Shayne revealed that he was ‘gutted’ to be in such a precarious position and was first to perform his save me routine. He was strong and competent and as always we loved the chemistry between him and his partner Maria.
Afterwards the X Factor star said:
“I am really happy with that performance.”
Matt was next to perform, with his partner Brianne Delcourt and in contrast to his dramatic ballet themed routine earlier in the evening, the pair went for a more emotional dance this time round. He had a big stumble at the beginning but proved strong for the rest of the dance. However, he seemed unhappy with his performance when it ended and was in tears as he waited for the results to be announced.
The mantle passed to the judges at this point and they were asked to vote for who they wanted to save and send through to next week’s show.
Karen Barber branded it the ‘skate off that should never have been’ but voted to save Matt. Ashley didn’t think either man should be in the bottom two but also voted for the Eastenders star.
Jason Gardiner disagreed and saved Ward, so the deciding vote lay with Robin. He sided with the girls and saved Lapinskas.
