Torvill and Dean insist Dancing On Ice will not be cancelled!

Skating legends Torvill and Dean have promised Dancing On Ice fans that this is not the last series of the ITV show.

It had been reported that channel bosses were considering axing the format, after artings fell again this year despite their recent shakeup.

This year producers sacked Louie Spence and brought back Jason Gardiner. They also asked Karen Barber to return to the judging panel, to create some tension between her and the man she hasn’t spoken to in two years. They paid a fortune for US actress Pamela Anderson, only to have her voted off in the first week. All this and the viewing figures still fell.

Last weekend, after Keith Chegwin was eliminated and all the remaining contestants took part in a team challenge it was confirmed that Sunday’s live show attracted the lowest viewing figures in the series’ history.

However, in an interview with The Daily Star Christopher Dean said that he and Jayne Torvill are planning to be back for the next two years at least.

He said:

“We are very hopeful we will be back for the ninth series next year and then the tenth the year after that.

“We still have a really good core audience which we’ve had from the beginning.”

Chris recently hinted that ITV were in talks with them about a special series, since next year will be the 30 year anniversary of his and Jayne’s big win at the winter Olympics with The Bolero.

Speaking this weekend he added:

“So as long as ITV want us we will continue. We were part of the creation of Dancing On Ice right from the beginning, so we are very invested in the show.

“We want it to be as good as it can be and I think this year is the best yet.”

Dean did concede that ratings for the ITV show have fallen, but he thinks it’s a common problem facing most TV shows right now and blames the frequent ad breaks for much of the decline.

He continued:

“Ratings are down across the board. There are so many channels and so much choice nowadays. For a show like ours, which is on for an hour-and-a-half, we are up against people who record it so they can fast-forward all the ad breaks.”

In the meantime the pair are hoping they can keep it interesting for those tuning in this weekend. They have something big planned for tonight’s show and tweeted last night saying:

“We have a very edgy number for the pros tomorrow. I hope you al like it. Very different for DOI. 😊”

This week is props week and they added:

“Who will be in control tonight Prop or celebrity. Each have a mind of their own.”

“Props week. Watch out for chair men of the ice 😉”

I am a devoted follower of DOC, but every Sunday I record the programme, rather than watch it live. It is not the ads that bother me, it is the time that this prog is on! Far too early, I would not be free to watch anything until 7.30 or later. Fine for children, but too early for most adults to settle down for a nights viewing. Years ago when this prog was on at a later time, viewing figures were higher. There has also been a huge and noticeable LACK of publicity in the press when the new series started. As an example, in previous years, Radio Times might have done a front cover or at least a major article, this year, I did not know it was on! Only Twitter gave me any info. Shockingly bad for a new series.
Change the time, get more publicity, figures WILL go up! It is a wonderful programme, it just needs more razzmatazz to announce itself AND repeat showings on another day, what happened to those? Don’t over think it guys, it’s simples!!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
