Simon Cowell Will Stage Grease Is The Word On ITV
ITV has today unveiled its latest collaboration with Simon Cowell. In a brand new primetime entertainment series, ITV will be staging the biggest casting call the UK has ever seen to find the starring roles of Sandy and Danny for a new stage production of the worldwide hit musical Grease which will open in London’s West End in 2007.
ITV will be filling summer nights with the search for two unknown performers to take the highly coveted roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko. ITV today confirmed that the UK’s leading theatre producer, David Ian, will be a judge on the show and will also be producing the West End version of the stage show, together with producing partner Paul Nicholas.
Simon Cowell said: “We’ve been thinking about making this programme for years. Grease in my opinion is the best musical of all time and I am incredibly excited to be given this opportunity.”
Duncan Gray, Controller of Entertainment at ITV said: “Grease and ITV are a perfect fit the hunt for the new Sandy and Danny to star in the world’s best known musical produced by the crack team behind the X Factor.”
I really hope that ITV can handle this show as well as the BBC handled the earlier search for a West End Star in ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria’

One of my favourite musicals of all time is West Side Story, not just because it handles the story of a Shakespearan classic love story or because it brings racial tensions to light in a modern way. But the reason why I Like this musical above all other more modern musicals is the fact that it marks the end of a good era for real singers in musicals.
The modern musical which uses popular musical ideas and styles of writing and performing gives credence to the divide in musical theatre. That divide has on the opposing bench belters and the voice of the street. In some ways West Side Story is a sad end to the demise of the real singing voice in musical theatre.
Grease for all it uses modern musical sounds and dance and is in fact the best selling of modern musicals in my view does not have the quality and standing of the older musicals.
Simon will have to employ people from the world of theatre to be mentors and judges in there entirety even for this one. This area is not Simon’s forte and he would do well to become an observer.
I am also saddened that ITV will do this as it means what has the potential to draw a large viewing audience will be targetted mercilessly by advertising. Advertising spoils the quality and continuity of good programming. The BBC must be having financial problems if they can’t keep a foothold on what they do best.

As much as I hate Simon Cowell, (and David Ian for jumping ship) I will still be auditioning for Sandy.
I think ALW’s ‘Any dream Will Do’ will be so much better than ‘Grease is the word’ anyway.

Sorry to correct you Maureen but for Grease you only need to be over 16 on 1st Jan 07.
The two audition venues are Manchester and London for 1st audition.
You need to call 0900 100 22 22 to register for audition, but in truth, unless they are seeing everyone it’s a luck of the draw thing. The message states “If you are selected for audition you will be sent a pack”…which doesn’t give you much hope as you can’t sell yourself on an answer message (there’s no opportunity anyway). Word of warning, auditions start soon I think so get your skates on PLUS when they ask you for your phone number you only get about 2 seconds to say it in, so be quick…I got half way through my mobile and had to call back!!!!

Good luck everyone..I registered, but I don’t think I’ll be getting a pack as I’m 35 - I should have lied about my age, but what-ho…at least I only look about 18 still lol…and Olivia NJ was in her 30s when she played Sandy.
I’ll be upset if I don’t get a chance though as I’ve heard a rumour that the girls will all be asked to sing Hopelessly Devoted to weed out the less able ones as it can go quite high. Arghh… My mate Got a pack through, but her mother thought it was a dance audition.. so she gave it 2 me
thing is i cant get to the audition at 8.00am from Swansea (to london!) Plus i have a college assessment the same day!

I have an audition at 10am on tues in london. You will notice if you read the audition letter that only the person named can turn up (and you have to show ID). So unfortunately Sarah, ringing may be your only option!
Also, the production team rang me yesterday to see if I was attending and question me for 10 minutes, which I found a little odd?! This happened to anyone else?!

They wanted to know if I was attending, what I would be wearing, what I would be singing and then just general questions like ‘are you looking forward to it’! Only thing can think is that they don’t have enough Danny applicants and were trying to ensure some attended!!

My audition is in London.. I wonder how many people have been asked to come. I know that only 50 got through to ‘Grease Academy” in the American version. Most had many years of training. It will be good craic anyway…anyone know who is on the panel?

Well, mine is also in london and on tuesday so they are doing at leats two days, which suggests quite a lot of people! I know from speaking them on the phone that there are two hour audition slots (so lots of people get 8am, another lot at 10am etc). I know David Ian will eventually be on the panel, but from what they told me on the phone, this first round will not be in front of the Judges. This is pretty normal for these kind of programs, they will let all sorts through I (the really good, really bad, funny, people with a sob story) in order to get the numbers down but also so they can make out on tv that the next round is the first round. That way, they will already have some idea of who the camera will be focussed on and whose stories they will follow. You will notice if you have watched the american show, that there are certain people you see all the time!! These were selected in ‘the real’ first round by researchers. So make sure you are prepared to chat and sing on monday if anyone approaches you in the holding area.

you also have to dance and if sucessful you will be given a blue form and then you will have to wait around some more to be given details of the next stage.

Hi,
First they make you wait in a room for a long time very xfactor style,then depending what group your in a,b or c etc a team leader will explain the process of how if your through they will let you know on the day and get you to fill out a blue form and wait around to find out the next auditions details.
Once your group is called you go into a huge room with everyone and they put on a grease song for you all to dance to THIS IS THE TIME TO STAND OUT FROM THE REST.They then get you in a big circle and get you to dance to a different track,ours was Christina aint no other man.
The panel isn’t a panel really, i had one person in our room a young women and there wasn’t any cameras…….

Also got through to the next round. Kinda excited but did get to thinking about the boring stuff like….
If you actually make it through to the ‘boot camp’ stages of these competitions, do the production company actually give you any expenses for lost wages etc. Some of the people who get through must have mortgages etc. I know I would find it extremely difficult to get time off without losing my job!
If any of you have the answer to this question, I would be interested to know!

Dont worry about camping outside i had my audition at 13:00 and i arrived at 12 but the guy at the door told me to come back at 12:30 i did and yes there was a que but they start letting you in at your slot.
I would say get there for 9 ish go to the doors and see what they say if they tell you to come back go have a hot drink at starbucks across the road.

as it is an open audition I wouldn’t think there would be a problem with showing up. They may recognise you, but if they do then what have you lost? If you don’t go along you will always wonder if it would have made a difference. I say go along and try again, if nothing else it will be a fun day out.

hi i have been looking all over the net for info on how the show will be set out etc i got through to next round and have to go back 27th i have been so ill since my audition and even lost my voice during it but they were so kind and said they wanted to give me the benefit of the doubt! got to get through another round though before you go infront of the celebs!

Im practisin all the time!! pity were not auditionong on the same day! we’d have a great laugh!
I was readin the other chatline and one of the girls who didnt get through said wen you go in producers go around everyone lookin 4 an interview and a song on the cameras!! then you get put into a group of 50 people and go into a hall and dance to 4/5 songs! (no dance routines just your own kinda dancin!
she then said you get split into groups of 10 and go to a room with your group and perform your 2 songs!!!
She said they tell you there and then whether your through or not!!!
Its on this website just in the other grease section! have a look at it!!!
Im wearin an outfit like the one sandy wears in ‘your the one that i want’!!
hope weather calms down too!!! il be bloody flyin over and i hate planes as it is without bad weather!!

anyway everyfin was gud the dancin the lot bt wen i came 2 sing i front of the judges there was onli 1 man nd he was so rude, wen i 1st went in there he ws playin on his fne aniway i started to sing my second song nd he stopped me nd asked if i cud sing anova sond so i sang fields of gold nd he just cut str8 across me nd said look its a no from me, i was so shoked at how rude he was, my 1st song went well the 1 frm grease bt 4 sum reason he didnt lyk ma 2nd 1!
i sed 2 him why didnt i make it nd he sed cos ur voice doesnt suit the character 4 sandy which is a load of crap aniway i jst knew frm the very 1st minute that he didnt lyk me. lookin bk nw i shud of gt a secong oppinion frm anuva judge bt i was so shocked!

um there was quite a few ppl dressed up there today nd well lyk i sed i seen ppl quein so i jst decided to join the queue nd wen i gt in there da ppl sed if ani1 doesnt show up i can take there place, so wen u go on thursday u shuld try nd go a bit earlier!
nah there werent any proffesional dancers there although there were sum gud 1’s tho but i wouldnt b reli bovad to be honest wiv yah.
they made us dance 2 3 songs today, grease lightning, christina agularia dirty nd a jazzy song!

just to reply to the question bout the judges if you get through you get a blue piece of paper telling you that you have another round infront of producers and if you get through that 1 it will be simon cowell and co next and they want a minute long dance routine aswell as your 2 songs i cant dance for toffe so just gonna play by ear lol they let you take friends and family to the next stage so i will have more suport i still aint 100% so hopin and praying i am better by 27th feb which is the next audition both stages happen on the same day too so atleast you dont have to come back a third seperate time for the celebraty panal they do walk round witha camera and ask you to sing so grab ya chance it could be ya famous five minutes! also it prepares you coz ya sing infront of a whole room and the audition is only 1 person so its like a practise run!

hello i got through!!!!! i went on valentines day and when they took us all into that room to dance i was like WHAT!!!! but it was good fun and glad i did it coz it warmed me up for my audition i had a lady who did my audition and she was really nice, i was just hoping that i got through because as you walk out eveyone knows whether you got in or not because they give you a blue sheet, but thankfully i did!!!! lou xx

You have to sing the same two songs for the rest of the audition process!!! im glad coz i really like my songs!!! im startin getin my dance routine ready now! thinkin of pickin beyonce ‘crazy in love’! no major ideas yet! simon will be watchin you do the dance and then you may have to sing for him aswell!! scary! he is very scary! but hes funny!!! i know youl do great in the x-factor! il tell simon to be nice to you!!! there seems to be alot of people auditioning in my next round!!

I was in Mancester for the 10am on the 15th, group B….same as you John Boy.
I got thru too. Surprisingly, cos I’m 39, and I think they had clocked me as an “old bird” from the moment I walked into the holding room, cos they interviewed me in there to camera and I had to sing one of my songs. Thought I was gonna have a heart attack. The dancing terrified me, cos i really cant dance, but my hubby said to me, just do the splits and distract them from your terrible dancing….so I did and lost my shoe!!!!
Anyway guys am down in london on the 2nd for the 8am start. (omg…..how do I get my slap on and get dressed and sorted and there for 8am???!!!) That will be a challenge in itself. Terrified of the 60 second dance routine, but having read,re-read and triple read my blue letter, I think you have to get past the programme producers first before you dance infront of the celebs. I am quite sure I won’t get that far anyway, there’s serious talent about and my nerves take over……it took me one and a half valium to enable me to sing anyway, and I nearly decided not to bother when we got called in for the dancing! Boy could some of those folk dance….and there was me contemplating doing the actions to Y.M.C.A!!!
Good luck all of you….come and introduce your self to me at the next auditions….blonde hair, white dress with blue spots, very 50’s….I’ll be the one shaking like a leaf and drinking a large bottle of cider!!!

Heya Caron im the one u wer speaking 2 when we were both waiting outside the audition room i was wearing a leather jacket, white T.shirt and black jeans. I’m soo nervous allready!! i really hope i get thru da first audition just so i get to come face to face with Simon! Do we have to do our dance in front of da programme producers aswell? or is it just in front of da celebrity judges?
Heya lee, well i can do a Michael Jackson style 360 spin but thats about it, i’m tempted to learn da moonwalk b4 da next audition lol but im not sure if i shuld rip off his moves cos i know i wont be able to pull them off like he does and also it will probably look beter to da judges if i try come up with my own moves and routine. A Chair! that sounds interesting they probably wud let you use it but there may not be a spare one in da room you may have to carry it in with you as you enter, it wud be funny to see da look on Simons face seeing you come in carry a chair lol.

Hello,
Sore throats are bad news for singers as pushing yourself to sing through one can do damage. The sort of damage I mean is ruptured vocal chords at the more serious end which can take months to recover from. The least damage is pulling or straining the muscles in the throat.
Sometimes if you have a cold and a mild sore throat you can get through singing for a short while. But you will need lots of water, lots of salt water gargles, or lemon gargles ‘plj juice’ is very good to gargle with. You will also need to do more gentle warm up exercises and warm down exercises than the actual singing of your songs. On the main forum under the thread, ‘Grease, I have my audition’ I have put in some breathing exercises which will help.
Also, you must never under estimate the value of a good singing teacher, I do not mean voice coach or voice guru. A singing teacher is someone who carries serious qualifications and initials after there name of the establishment they have qualified with. The Guildhall school of music, Trinity college, The london School of Music, The Julliard school of music, The Royal schools of music. To name but a few of the most prestigious. These singing teachers are qualified to teach pupils safely how to sing, not how to belt the loving daylights out of your voice and if you can afford this standard of tuition than you may have a career in musical or classical theatre.
You only have one voice why take a chance with it. Damage it and you will have to live with it for years. BTW it isn’t just your singing voice that will suffer if you do damage yu need your voice to speak with also.
Anyone serious about having a musical career should consider training.

I just hope i remember my routine! ive it nearly ready now coz i spent all day yesterday doin it! im usin a chair in my routine? do you think this will be allowed? i cant wait now! its so long to have to wait! friday week! i really enjoyed the last one and id say the next one will be good fun too!
i think you should look for a record producer! do up some sample cds of you singin and send them off to some companies! what kinda songs do you sing? id say youl do very well in the x-factor!

Hi Guys!!(and John boy!,so good to know its you….It was talking to you that made me have a hunt around online to find this website! Do you know what, I dont think Simon Cowell is going to be one of the judges…I think he is just sponsoring the programme as its part of his production company, I dunno.
Hilarious (hideous) afternoon! Have just had a dance lesson with a lady from the royal ballet, who is the most petite, tiny, drop dead gorgeous little thing you have ever set eyes on. Felt like a hippopotamus next to her………….and danced like one for that matter. I am HOPELESS…….I mean, REEEAAAALLLLY hopeless. My arms and my legs dont co-operate, and my body does totally different things to what my brain is telling it to do. There is NO hope. I either do the birdy song routine, or dont bother turning up at all!! Seriously!!
I am now having major doubts! I know I can sing, and I can dance when I am completely blathered, but when I’m sober????It ain’t gonna happen!!
I have had to come home and have a very stiff Gin and Tonic, and god knows how I will get to my singing lesson later as I will be unable to drive at this rate.
Having read Louise’s mailing, I am seriously worried as to why I have got through….me thinks they are using me for the novelty value, cos there are so many drop dead gorgeous, YOUNG, talented girls there….why put me through unless its because I stand out as the odd one out…….I reckon they have thought….”poor deluded, old boiler, lets put her through though, cos it will make good viewing”.!!!
From having analysed and digested every word on THE blue letter, I am guessing we sing infront of the programme producers, but not dance, then if we get thru’ we sing infront of celeb judges and perform the birdie song to them…. Wot do you think??
Anyway, back to practising this dance routine…..oh how you would all laugh if you could see me!!!! Its not a good look, anyone know any good body doubles???

Have been havin a major wobble about the whole thing today…..my lack of confidence has taken over a bit, but you are so right,it’s an opportunity that I will regret forever if I don’t see where I can go with it. I am very good at putting on a front and pretending I can do something, when really I am quaking in my boots!!
My audition is 2nd March, 8am, whens yours?? I’m still really unsure whether I will go or not, it depends on how I go with the dancing… (so far UGHHHH!) but if suddenly the penny drops and I turn into Michael Jackson overnight, I will go for it!! Can’t dance, but gonna try. I have had a dance teacher mate make me a routine, basically it is the hustle routine that john travolta does in saturday night fever, but simplifed for an amateur like me! A mintue aint long so I wouldnt worry if you aint started yet.
As for the panel, pretty sure simon is not on it, sorry those of you who are looking forward to seeing him!
It is just his company running the show, not him personally.

Im on tuesday! But mine isnt until 1pm! Im soooooo excited, I have kinda got a bit of routine but am still unsure of what song to do it to! I hope everyones recalls go well! jem xxx

im going back on tuesday at 8am and if u get though the dace audtion u have 2 sing again and if u pass these u get to c simon in the afternoon and thats when cats there to best of luck to all.x

You may have noticed that due to the huge amount of comments on this page it can sometimes cause problems with the loading of the page and make it very slow.

Donna, is it definately the case that you have to dance first on tuesday in order to get any further? cos that is not the way the letter reads, although to be honest it doesnt make much sense at all!!
Might see you there at 8am on tuesday, I will be dressed as Danny (doesn’t narow it down much I know!)black leather jacket, black jeans and t shirt.

Hey jason!
i think you sing first for the produces and if they put you through that round you then dance for the celebrity judges and sing the same songs. dont know who the judges are though!! dont worry too much. just do the same as you did in the first round and youl be fine!

i was told by one of poeple down there last time that u have to get though the 2 morning audtions then in the afternoon u will sing in front of simon david ian and a guest judge dont worrie jason u will b fine i will c u there im in a big pink skirt u cant miss me.im worried about danceing as i am a big girl.good luck babes c u there.x good luck 2 every1

Heya guys hows the Dancing going? I still havnt started mine yet!!!! Ive bin so busy with Uni work that i aint had time! i fink im just gonna rehearse loads next week. Ive bin trrying to find sum1 who can help me with my Choreography but i dnt really know n e 1!
O well i guess im just gonna have 2 watch a whole load of classic dance films like Sat Night Fever, Thriller, and Flash Dance lol and fuse them all together into one routine! I’m just dreading screwing up the dance routine and making a complete arse of myself on national television!! Any1 feel the same?

right no-one knows who the celeb judges are when i had my interview thing the girl said that its all under wraps so no1 noes who they’ll be. you have to dance in front of the producers and then the celeb judges

Mine is at one! Nice not to be there so early! Im dancing to “Dont Stop Me now!” I was just choreograping in my room and sliced my hand open on my wardrobe! Im bleeding! Aghh! Im rele scared although we only have to do the dance if we get through to the celeb judges round
