Jim Davidson Leaves Hell’s Kitchen Amidst Homophobic Row

Jim DavidsonBritish comedian, Jim Davidson has left ITV’s Hell’s Kitchen reality TV show, after a row with fellow contestant Brian Dowling.

Brian and Jim rowed after Jim complained about a look he had been given by one of the diners in the restaurant. Jim commented:

“Why do shirt lifters pull that same face?” he said, prompting Dowling to call him the “most offensive person he had ever met”.

In a statement, Davidson admitted the pressure of the show “did make me play up to the worst of my perceived image”.

“People who know me know I am not homophobic,” he continued.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said it had received 46 complaints over Davidson’s “bullying” of Dowling.

  1. I had a dream about Hells Kitchen UK last night.
Jim Davidson was in a kitchen, and it was flooding. a Lifeboat came along and dragged him in, but Jim jumped out and retorted.. “I’ll swim for it!”

Show is cool, I think Jim should have been given a smaller spade, me thinks he protesteth to much!

Hells Kitchen - you insult your audience

The clash between Brian and Jim was a disaster waiting to happen or, more to the point had been set up by the producers. Putting JD in a situation where he would live, eat and work alongside any one from a group whom he had made a living from deriding in the past was obvious - and basically unworthy manipulation by a main stream channel which raises many questions -did Jim and Brian collude in this by accepting to appear on the show, were they set up, do they receive any emotional support - or is it all an act - and if so, will we be regaled by follow up rehabilitation stories, as in the case of BB.

Rather than raise levels of debate and awareness about issues in the programme such as homophobia, ageism, the rights of gypsies, discrimination against vegetarians - we will be subjected to a range of snide comments and witless quips from the show’s commentator.

Issues are always raised by reality shows- sometimes they are entertaining, occassionally they are thought provoking. Where such issues are raised it should be the responsibility of the broadcasting company to provide avenues of real debate.

I am quite interested by one of JDs comments - where is there a place for him, and others like him, in our society. Providing autocued one liners belittles the reality of a population out of step with modern thinking, persisting in, or hiding prejudiced views - which were previously an ‘accepted norm’. Debate and discussion rather than derision and dismissal is needed

Brian Dowling (the ex air steward who rose to fame playing his gay card!!)sums up how far our society has went towards the PC brigade. Jim had an opinion that was then turned around by an ignorant no hopper which made him look like a racist bully— and suprise suprise the homophobic gay trump card came out again –please anyone let me know if there is a nw worlds out there where we can set up again and get some moral values back into society

Here Here Ewan, Could not agree more. I can not believe how narrow minded the “producers” are being.

here here, I think its about time brian stopped playing that “I’m the only gay in the village” card, frankly its just plain boring and irritating!!!

I totally agree with Ewan as well. I used to like Brian, but he has now gone way down in my esteem. Jim wasn’t being rude when he said GAY Good as you. He meant it as a compliment but Brian is so wrapped up in himself that he couldn’t see it. What a waste of space he is. I really hope he doesn’t win, his harping on about being gay is now getting on my nerves. Bring back Jim, real people, people who make you laugh. Down with PC!

I think it’s totally pathetic what the producers have done to Jim. The homophobic card has been played once again, and I guarantee not for the last time. I knew that Brian’s sexual preferences would come into play before very long. Everything with talentless Brian, who incidentally seems to be stuck in a permanent (poor) impression of Graham Norton, is an act for the cameras to get him as much publicity as possible. He must be laughing now, knowing that he’s got the liberal sympathy vote. I’m just fed up with the gay community constantly portraying themselves as some kind of victims in life. Who sticks up for the male, white, christian, straight combination who are now the real oppressed and unlistened to group in society. I for one will not be giving ITV any more of my money by voting on the show.

what ever is wrong with the younger generation. Jim davidson was very tongue in cheek and not at all offensive. I have seen him in action and if he goes for the audience there is no disguising it. To call him a bully was wrong. but then I am of the same genration as jim and we dont take ourselves that seriously

Jim Davidson was no being offensive, he was only having a bit of fun, his humour may not be to everybodies taste in this “pc world” we live in but Brian’s reaction was so over the top, If you can’t stand the heat Brian get out of the kitchen and do us all a favour.

Did anyone see the cockroach walk across the screen when Abi was cleaning her pidgeon. It walked across the worktop behind her, no I do not mean Jim Davidson, there was another cockroach on the screen that night.I would have thought that the kitchen would have been clean for a show like that. If you have it on tape watch behind Abi as she cleans her pidgeon. Please do not ask me to eat there, just the thought of it makes me feel sick

Jim was not being homophobic, he did not call Brian a ’shirtlifter’, and Brian was playing up for the cameras in my opinion. When he said that Gay meant Good As You he was actually giving him a compliment and all Brian could do was burst into crocodile tears. I hope he is satisfied, he has gone down in my opinion and for him to rip up Jim’s letter shows just how small minded he really is.

So many good comments. JD has been around for years and will still be around in years to come. He has proven his own ability to entertain. What has BD done! a talentless young Gay man, living in a talentless Gay society. Unfortunately is this is what we have become. Stick to you guns JD, there are plenty of us who believe in the same values as you.

After watching Jim being kicked out tonight we immediately went for the off switch - no more will we watch the programme now that it has been hijacked by the PC/Gay/sobbing girlie brigade (please can someone strangle that ghastly Adele person). Perhaps if Jim was black and went by the name of Sir Trevor McD he could say whatever he liked and get away with it. Long live Jim and his opinions, we need more like him to trash the PC movement and give Britain back to the people!

    WTF is so offensive about
“Good As You” isnt that a good thing ??

Jim was set up from the start with ITV and the press going out of their way to portray him in a bad light. Much of what happened was blown out of proportion and twisted by both ITV and the other contestants to hype up what is, essentially a dull show left now with non-entities. For Marco to beg Jim to stay and then set him up with a team involving Brian and that pathetic girl is either overwhelmingly naive of him or proof that Jim was being set up. He should have acted like a proper boss and intervened.
To get rid of Jim for his insensitivity and to then go on to show the reaction of the others singing and bitching about him is hypocritical.
Jim - you were the best person in the show - the others are weak, pathetic and two faced - you were the only genuine person there.

I would like to have seen what happened if Jim had called Brian a fudge packer - far more offensive to the public - but hell if you are a gay guy that is what you do, so how can it be offensive. Jim was stating what is real - gay guys should get real.

HELL’S KITCHEN???? what exactly is hellish about it, I’ve never seen so many whingeing brats in the same place and as for the chef “Marco” insert some authority will you?!?! Not one of them would have lasted 5 mins under Gordan Ramsey, especially not Brain!!!

Who suffers being “gay”. White middle aged hetrosexuals with children that want a “normal” viewing on television. Not touchy childish so called men with a different sexual preference holding a PC card up. Every time someone points out the obvious. Jim is much more enjoyable to watch than a cry baby Brian who milked the situation that never was. Well done Jim shame on you ITV.

He’s made a living out of appealing to the worst in people
He’s not just homophobic, but racist and misogynist as well
    And not even remotely funny
I’m glad he was booted out

We agree with you Ewan. It is unbelievable what type of people they are encouraging onto our televisions. We have this gay card thrusted into our faces all the time and we are sick and tired of it. Its about time we did something about it. I would much rather watch Jim on tv than Brian. At least Jim wouldn’t burst into tears over a comment.

brian get a life jim was right being gay doe’s not make you special you keep going on about it has if you are the only one grow up it’s easy to think you are been pick on but what happen to freedom of speech you cry and everyone is suppose to clamp up
everyone is entitled to there point of view you are gay but that doe’s mean that everyone as to like you wor agree with you i know alot of gay men but they don’t act like you do they get on with there life

  24. Just goes to show how braindead the younger ones are today. They are nothing more than overpaid undertalented wingers while the likes of Jim Davidson has packed more into his life and experiences than this lot will ever do.As for singing songs on the show after Jim had gone well just shows who the little children are doesnt it.

I felt so sorry for Jim - he must think the whole world is against him. I hope he reads all these letters about how good he is and how it was HIM that was being bullied by all the young nobodys. None of them seemed to think it was offensive for them to speak so rudely to someone old enough to be their fathers. In Jims day, he would have shown respect to his elders - something the young have no concept of. For Lee to tell someone of Marcos age and stature in life to F*** off, is far more offensive than Marco saying Piky’s Picnic. The whole of the freeloading audiance are mainly unknown WAGS and low rate footballers with huge ego’s and no manners. Keep being yourself Jim and ignore the wannabes who arn’t even worthy to shine your shoes. Thanks Marco for defending Jim too.

I think Brian knew exactly what he was doing, if somebody had upset me constantly you would not see me sitting next them having a glass of wine, he manipulated the final arguement.Even one of the chefs said to Brian he had never worked knowingly with a gay before, and you could see Brian biting his lip. And his crying is just laughable. JD was a fool to fall for it. I think JD doesn’t like somebody like Brian being on these shows as he is not really a celebrity, and I agree. I hope that Brian goes tonite, it would make my day. But I suspect the victim card will come out so we will have to endure the “Brian show” for a little bit longer.

  27. Andy Tomlinson said

I agree with some comments as before. Jim made no more worse comments than most people. At the end of the day and whether Brian likes it or not, he is a shirtl*fter and a taker I am sure. There is nothing offensive about this, he wasn’t bullying he was stating a point. Unfortunately, Jim put himself in a position where nobody would listen and just moved the conversation to a point of where everything he said was taken the wrong way. I have nothing against gay people but I still call them poof etc and I do not conceive myself as a bully. They are just words, I am a bit chunky and a bit mouthy so if someone calls me a fat t@at then I tend to accept it because I am !!. If Brian has such a hangup about being called a shirtlifter then maybe he should act in a way more befitting a man and not camping it and mincing around the kitchen screaming like a girl and acting a prima Donna when all he done is won a reality TV show !!. He does have that look of being a gay and does sound gay, nothing can change that. Jim, well done you said in the last five days what most poeple wanted to say for the last five years

Surely the educated people who comment this website cannot be that narrow minded.

It’s precisely what JD (supposedly) said in his parting letter - he and BD have very different minds! It is clearly obvious that the root of the problem is that JD REFUSES to look at things from BD (and/or other peoples’) POV! Sure, JD - in his and from what I can see, a LOT of peoples’ minds - most likely did NOT mean any harm when he said what he said, but did he for one second ever stopped to wonder maybe he should pick what he says more cautiously? If everybody in the world were to say what is on our minds WITHOUT ANY CONSIDERATION for other peoples’ feelings, imagine the bloody chaos! JD should have realised that he was NOT doing a stand up routine on stage where he can be as unPC as he wants - he’s having a conversation with someone as anyone is doing in a day to day situation. Or at least he was supposed to be.

Granted, BD was ungracious in the aftermath. Granted, BD does tend to whinge a lot. BUT BD DID do what JD did not even try. At least BD tried to have a decent conversation/discussion with JD a few nights ago to attempt to understand him a little bit better.

Other people (contestants in the show, if you will) manage to understand that people are different and try to adapt to get along. I don’t see why/how JD finds that so difficult to do.

  29. JJ said

I also hope that JD reads these comments as he should know that he has support. JD is a real person & is entitled to his opinions just like Brian is. If, as Brian said he has never been so insulted in his life, then he has led a very sheltered life & needs to prepare himself for the real world & not just the Endamol world he seems to be living in, he will during his life come across many people who are not to his liking but that’s real life. The youngsters (the term celebrity does not apply to them)remaining will be panicking shortly wondering who will be victimised next, because it will happen if you have silly little girls & a queen in the mix.

I have never liked Jim Davidson but I feel the need to defend him on this occasion.
Brian was like a spoilt brat crying and whining until he got what he wanted.
Growing up in the 70s I was told that the letters GAY stood for what Jim Davidson said they did and I cannot understand the hysteria from Brian. The “offensive” SL word is just that a word, and cannot demean unless you allow it to demean you.
Its a shame that a man who (like it or not) has a natural gift for entertaining and has worked to achieve his position in life could be beaten by a man who achieved fame only by appearing on a Big Brother show and exploiting his sexuality.

I think whats happened with Brian and Jim was a set up to. Everyone knows that Jim does joke that no one else will do. He’s famous for his gay/racist/ and non pc jokes. The producers knew this put still but him in the kitchen with Brian. It was only a matter of time before this happened, and i think the way people reacted was silly. He was made to feel like a victim when he was only being himself.

  32. Helena said

I’m even more worried now that people actually seem to think Jim Davidson’s unpleasant views are “OK”
For heaven’s sake, see him for what he is: a right-wing dinosaur who can’t stand the idea of women, gay people and ethnic minorities being equal!

  33. LES said

Well done Jim. All those wimps out there who are unable to stand up to a strong character always revert to PC as a means of getting other wimps on their side. They just cannot stand alone and stick up for themselves. Possible Social Workers like those in Wakefield.

  34. coojon said

In reply to Helena, not only do some people think JD’s views are ok, many actually agree with him [like me]. for far too long minority groups have dictated how the majority should run our lives. it is the PC nazis that are narrow minded because they ignore the majority. equal rights means equal rights for all, JD asked the question ‘who looks out for people like me’ he may be a middle aged man with dinasaur views but he is right. If all these PC nazis think so strongly why are they not roaming the world fighting in countries where being gay is illegal or being of the wrong race means your life is in danger.

  35. m80kmb said

Brian is a classic example of how the talons of a minority have got a solid grip on the plain speaking, hard working, life experienced majority. He is a sad little T*At who needs a sharp slap in every sense of the word and then sent back under his stone. JD articulates an worldly attitude that is deemed “incorrect” by arrogant nobodies who see their role as policing the thoughts of a society that permits their existence. Jim you did the right thing to walk out, I dare to hope “Brian the talentless boy Tart” reads these opinions and bursts into (real)tears again. The pathetic little whinger needs poke in the eye with a large stick as he’d probably enjoy a kick up the A***se with an open toed sandal.

  36. GraceB said

when I watched the scenes from Hell’s Kitchen between JD & BD all I saw was a confused JD trying to work out what he had said to reduce a “grown man” to tears, all he was trying to do was understand was why a gay man would be upset by him saying he thought GAY stood for good as you I don’t believe JD was intentionally being offensive but was trying to pay BD a compliment by saying he thought of him as being as good as anyone else.
When BD started his drama queen act JD should have just walked away and found someone with a brain cell to talk to.
Maybe the younger contestants and viewers don’t remember the past when being gay was illegal and meant you were not considered to be a “normal” human being with equal rights.
And before anyone accuses me of being a biggoted dinosaur let me just point out that I am gay and I have heard this expression before, it doesn’t offend me because I think that I am as good as anyone else.
Young Master Brian needs to grow up,if he finds someone’s comments out of line then he should try to explain to that person why what they have said is offensive to him, bursting into tears and screaching is hardly helpful and will merely enforce the views of the minority of homophobic people who still don’t think we are as good as them.

  37. I find it quite amusing that OFCOM had 46 complaints made about Jims bullying. What the hell are we playing at when a dot percentage of the population complain and a toothless watch dog growls. Its time to take a stand against irrelevant people having the cheek to tell us what we can and cant say. FREE SPEECH RULES!!!! By the way Grace very well put and in the words of Austin Powers ‘I salute you’
