Gillian McKeith fainted during her first ‘I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!’ Bush Tucker Trial.
The TV nutritionist – who, alongside former MP Lembit Opik, was voted by the public to take part in the first task – admitted she was “terrified” at the thought of competing in ‘The Crate Escape’ challenge for Camp Sheila.
Hosts Ant and Dec explained the pair would be plunged underground into pitch darkness in a chained and padlocked crate – complete with the addition of a variety of gruesome jungle critters – which they would then have to try and unlock before escaping through a tunnel.
Gillian said: “If I’m stuck in a crate with some kind of thing I’m probably going to pass out. We all know I’m afraid of everything that is in this jungle.
“I’m terrified. I was picked because my blood curdling screams will be heard for miles.”
Despite attempting the task in the hope of winning an evening meal for her fellow females in Camp Sheila, the star began to scream and panic as soon as water began dripping into her cage.
The ITV1 show’s on-site medic immediately dragged Gillian free of the chains before she fainted and had to be administered with oxygen.
She explained: “I wasn’t expecting anything in there. I couldn’t see the lock. I could feel myself passing out. I tried. I desperately tried. I have massive phobias that I’m facing. Its not like I’m not trying.
“I slept out in the jungle overnight and I’m terrified of insects and today I had to cross a bridge and I’m afraid of heights.”
While Lembit won the task and was awarded with a meal for Team Bruce, he admitted ‘The Crate Escape’ was one of the “most horrible” things he has ever had to do.
After the trial was successfully completed, he said: “It was one of the most horrible things I have ever had to do. It was harder than anything else I’ve ever done. We’re eating tonight. I’m pleased to have done it. I’m pleased to come back with good news.”
