Former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has been accused of “glamorizing” smoking by frequently lighting up in the I’m A Celebrity camp.
And apparently, some viewers have complained to Ofcom about the show featuring Helen smoking, as they fear it will encourage their children to follow suit.
In addition, a “health chief” has accused ITV of breaking broadcasting rules by failing to protect under-18s from the dangers of smoking.
TV Biz reports that in a complaint to Ofcom, Steve Bedser – who is Birmingham Council’s cabinet member for health and well-being – said, “Helen Flanagan was filmed repeatedly as she smoked.
“The frequency of this image was such that it condoned, encouraged and glamorised smoking, especially by young girls…
“There was no editorial justification for including these scenes.
“I am concerned that programmes with a high profile among young teenagers contribute to a rising incidence of smoking in young girls, with catastrophic effects upon their health and wealth.
“Furthermore, it can be watched at any time before the watershed via the internet or playback on a variety of devices which are widely available.”
But an ITV spokesman defended the editing of the show, saying, “ITV complies with the Ofcom code and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here! does not glamorise smoking.”
My god I’m so sick of this Nanny State attitude! If parents don’t want their kids watching Helen Flanag – who is an adult! – smoking then turn off your chuffin’ TV! Grr…
However, in other news, former I’m A Celeb contestant Limahl, who was of course voted off the show earlier this week, says that he and other camp members have had to warn Helen about the dangers of sleeping naked.
And, in an interview with the Daily Star after he left the camp, he added that Helen is naïve and “insecure”.
He began by saying of Helen, “She has been incredibly unfocused, running around chain smoking, not eating, insecure, in tears, incredibly needy, and looking for comfort.”
He added, “She fell asleep in the sun one day, which everybody knows is very dangerous, especially in Australia.
“She’s got very white skin. She’s a fragile thing.
“I said: ‘Helen, you’re going to get third-degree burns and then you’re never going to get through this ordeal.’
“Another time, she managed to get herself so cold that her feet turned purple. It’s because she’d fallen asleep with no clothes on.”
And he added that sleeping in the buff makes Helen more susceptible to being attacked by bugs and insects.
As we reported earlier, Limahl reckons that thanks to the hardships that are in part brought about by creepy crawlies, many of the celebrities are “struggling” to cope with camp life.
You can read about that here, but for now, here’s a reminder of Helen’s pre-show VT…
