Retired boxer Joe Bugner has faced Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier in the ring but will he be able to face his worse fears in the Australian outback as he joins the cast of I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here!?
“I do have butterflies, admitted Joe. “Not like when I fought Muhammed Ali or Joe Frazier but I’m nervous with anticipation. I’ve never slept under a jungle canopy and I’m worried about all the creepy crawlies and things so I’m not going in as a happy man.
“I’ll do whatever’s thrown at me but I won’t jump out of an aeroplane. I’ll do anything else but I won’t do that. Fighting Muhammed Ali is one thing but when you’re feet are not grounded I feel very insecure. I don’t like someone else to be in control. That really scares me.
“As a sportsman I’m pretty competitive and I think the jungle will be no exception. I’m definitely in it to win it. I only know the basics about the show, that there is not much food and that you earn the right to have specialities. If you win acceptance and respect from the British public then you can do well in the show and that’s great. Winning for me though is about being able to say that I’ve tried it and had a great time, so in that respect I’m here to win.
“I’ve had the best life on the planet. I’ve met kings and queens and rogues and gangsters. But to meet any kind of new people in a confined area is a bit odd. New people are always a bit strange and I might be a bit strange to them.
“I think with my face around the world for so many years, now I would imagine they would know of me. I won the World Heavy Weight Title. Joe is one of the lovable characters. Mind you I don’t take nonsense.
“I have a history that I can say is fact. Don’t bullsh*t a bullsh*tter. Cross me, then there’s a different story.”
