So here’s why Cilla Black turned down Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special & I’m A Celebrity….
Cilla Black has revealed that she was asked to appear on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special but refused to take part.
The Surprise Surprise star is celebrating half a century in showbiz with a special ITV programme this Wednesday but she won’t be popping up in a reality TV show any time soon and admitted in a new interview that she’s turned down scores of lucrative offers.
Cilla has no interest in dancing on Strictly, even if it is just for one show and she told The Daily Star:
“I don’t have the strength and I wouldn’t win. Name me one 70-year-old who has won Strictly?
“When I do things, I’m in it to win it, and I wouldn’t win this so I said no.”
Black also revealed that she was asked and turned down the chance to go into the jungle for I’m A Celebrity…..Get Me Out Of Here. The 70 year old star doesn’t think she could deal with eating kangaroo penis or crocodile bum and laughed:
“Those trials turn my stomach. Nothing foreign ever goes in my mouth.”
Cilla started out her career as a singer and new research published by BBC Radio 2 claimed that her version of “Anyone Who Had a Heart” was the UK’s biggest selling single by a female artist in the 1960s. She has appeared on ITV comedy Benidorm, took part in Through The Keyhole and appeared on Your Face Sounds Familiar in recent years but she revealed she doesn’t want to throw herself back into a full time showbiz career.
Black wants to concentrate on her family and close friends and explained:
“I’ve got no desire to sing or go on tour. I’m not like Cliff or Lulu. My life and family are more important to me than TV or music.
“My late husband Bobby always told me: ‘You make the business work for you. You don’t work for the business.’ ”
Speaking to The Mirror Cilla admitted that she was shocked when she heard ITV wanted to make a special programme about her career.
She can’t believe she’s had five decades of fame and admitted:
“Turning 70 was a real shock. I thought ‘I’m on the last lap now’.
“Then they wanted to do the 50 years TV special. I thought that was lovely – and the show is really fantastic.
“But I did wonder ‘Shouldn’t they have waited until I’m dead to do this? It’s like a living obituary!’
“But at least I get to enjoy it.”
