Popstar To Operastar 2011 results: Joe McElderry wins!

Tonight at the final of Popstar to Operastar, tenor Andrea Bocelli performed and sung Mamma. Also for the first time ever Andrea Bocelli performed Non Ti Scordar with Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon.

The final two celebrities also performed duets. Joe McElderry performed a duet with mentor Rolando, they sung Musica Proibita by Gastaldon / Flock and Cheryl Baker then took to the stage with mentor Katherine, they sung The Flower Duet (Sous le Dôme Èpais) from Lakmé by Delibes.

There was also a group performance which included, Joe Mc Elderry, Cheryl Baker and the two mentors Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon and they sung Funiculì Funiculà by Denza/Turco

After winning Popstar to Operastar 2011 Joe McElderry said: “Honesty I’ve had an absolute blast with Cheryl.”

Upon coming runner up Cheryl Baker said: “I didn’t expect to get this far and I’ve had money on Joe from the beginning, I’ve loved it.”

Below are details on each performance and the critics’ comments:

Joe McElderry sung Nessun Dorma from Turandot by Puccini

A relieved Joe, received a standing ovation from the audience whilst his grandmother Hilda was in tears after his performance of the classic operatic song, Nessun Dorma.

Judges comments:

Rolando Villazon said: “If anybody had any doubt you couldn’t sing with passion, well there it is there was so much passion. Two years of hard work and you will be fantastic, another chakka chakka performance.”

Katherine Jenkins said: “You said you wanted to improve from last time, and you did as the passion was there, please carry on doing this.”

Vanessa Mae said: “I felt the passion was there and you made every syllable count. I really feel like it was a good idea to do it again as you nailed it.”

Simon Callow said: “You’ve grown vocally and you have grown as a vocalist and as a man if you don’t mind me saying, that was fantastic.”

Cheryl Baker sung Je Veux Vivre from Roméo et Juliette by Gounod.

An emotional Cheryl also received a standing ovation after singing Je Veux Vivre.

Judges comments:

Simon Callow said: “Pure joy and that is what the aria is all about, wonderful.”

Vanessa Mae said: “It’s always tricky to do the same song, this was better as you settled into it. It was really really good you should be happy with that.”

Katherine Jenkins said: “I thought that was so much more improved and it was so lovely to watch. I think you should be so happy.”

Rolando Villazon said: “It is wonderful how Cheryl has fallen in love with Opera. You give you’re heart and that is beautiful and I give you a chakka chakka performance.”
