Boyband Singers Turned Reality TV Stars!

As ex-Blue member Simon Webbe is going to be appearing in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, we thought we’d take a look at which other ex-boy band members have done a stint on reality TV… and it’s a pretty long list!

It would appear that when all else fails, and your boy band is no longer bringing home the gilded bacon, finding yourself a reality TV show to appear in is the way forward.

Celebrity Big Brother and I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here seem to be something of a magnet to ex-boy banders; there’s been lots of them on both shows, but let’s take a look first at what the other members of Blue have been up to reality TV-wise…

Lee Ryan is currently rumoured to be going into the Celeb BB house this year but he’s also appeared on Hell’s Kitchen although he stormed out after a big row with chef Marco Pierre White. In addition, he took part in 24 Hours With… in which he was locked in a room with host Jamie Campbell.

His fellow ex-Blue band mate Anthony Costa appeared in I’m A Celeb in the 2005 series, only to be the fifth contestant to be booted out of the jungle.

Duncan James – who incidentally was in boy band V5 with ex-Big Brother housemate Ziggy Lichman – appeared in Dancing on Ice and got a broken rib for his trouble.

American boy band members seem to really love doing reality TV; Nick Carter, one of the Backstreet Boys, appeared in a reality TV show, Meet the Carters, which showcased his ‘dysfunctional’ family.

And pretty much all of N’sync have done some reality TV work. JC Chasez was a judge on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew while Joey Fatone came second place in the fourth season of Dancing With the Stars. Chris Kirkpatrick appeared in the VH1 reality series Man Band and starred in the seventh series of Dancing With the Stars, although his main ambition is to become an astronaut. He was certified by NASA and the Russian Space Program as a cosmonaut, but has yet to go to space.

As we mentioned earlier, Celebrity Big Brother usually has an ex-boy band member or two seemingly every year. Bez from the Happy Monday’s – though not strictly speaking a ‘boy band’ – appeared on Celeb BB in 2005 and won while Kenzie from boy band Blazin’ Squad came second. Kenzie later went on to appear on Sky One’s Cirque De Celebrite and ITV2’s Celebair.

Boyzone’s Keith Duffy was in the Celeb BB house in 2001 and of course, who could forget Donny Tourette in CBB series 5 who was lead singer of – not by any means a boy band, but hey ho – Towers of London.

Jermaine Jackson was also in the BB house during the famous/infamous race row debacle with Jade Goody, Jo O’Meara and Danielle Lloyd being the main protagonists in the row. He’s from, arguably, the very first boy band ever, The Jackson Five. Ian H Watkins from Steps was in the house during ‘that’ series too

Samuel Preston of The Ordinary Boys famously wooed and won the heart of Chantelle Houghton in series 4 of Celeb BB and she won the whole show!

Maggot of Goldie Lookin’ Chain went into the BB house in the 2006 series but long before him, Take That band member Mark Owen earned his reality TV stripes when he appeared on – and won – Celeb BB 2.

I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here has also had its fair share of ex-boy band members including Jimmy Osmond and, as mentioned earlier, Anthony Costa, as well as Matt Willis of Busted who won the King of the Jungle crown.

Brian Harvey of East 17 went into the jungle for series 4 but left early citing ‘personal reasons’ and Jason ‘J’ Brown of Five resurfaced from ex-boy band obscurity in series 7 last year.

And last, and very probably least in terms of reality TV appearances, Brian McFadden of Westlife competed in the televised Celebpoker tournament in 2006.

So if you remember any boy band members who’ve done a stint on reality TV that we’ve missed out, let us know and don’t forget you’ll be able to keep an eye on Simon Webbe – and all the other jungle bunnies – right here with us as we’ll have regular updates on all things I’m A Celebrity!

Lol, I don’t think you need the parenthesis around dysfunctional in describing the Carter family. You pretty much nailed it with that word. Nick Carter’s therapist would agree.

It’s Lance Bass who is starring, and going to win, the seventh season of Dancing With The Stars– not his fellow *N SYNCer Chris Kirkpatrick. Although Chris did recently appear on a show called Gone Country 2.
