When groundbreaking series Dating in the Dark premiered on LIVING last summer it wasn’t just viewers who couldn’t stop talking about the audacious televised experiment in the nature of attraction. The media couldn’t get enough of the radical twist on the traditional dating show, and the prestigious Royal Television Society crowned the series Best Multi-Channel Programme 2009. Now the innovative show is back for another season of must-watch TV this week.
Examining the role of aesthetic attraction in falling in love, the programme offers six singletons per episode the chance to get to know each other in a whole new way – in total darkness! Three women share one half of a specially designed house, while three bachelors share the other half, with the men and women only meeting each other in a pitch black ‘Dark Room’. Viewers can follow all the action with cameras in the lit portions of the house and high-tech infrared footage of the daters getting to know each other in the Dark Room.
In the second episode of the series, what will happen when models Talia and Andy date in the dark. Will they prove that looks aren’t everything? What will Sci-Fi ‘geek’ Sami make of Britney Spears impersonator Lorna? Do opposites really attract? And despite being robbed of their sight, will alternatively-dressed Brandon and Alayne get it together in the darkness?
At the end of each show each participant picks who they feel they’ve connected with and that person is revealed in a spotlight for only a matter of seconds. Days of flirting may come to nothing if the big reveal disappoints. Each contestant must finally choose to meet their prospective partner in the flesh or walk away, potentially leaving them heartbroken. It’s nail-biting anguish for some singletons, but compelling telly for viewers as LIVING discovers if love really is blind.
