Diane Abbot Stars In Play It Again
Diane Abbott, MP, tries to learn how to play the classical piano in the penultimate episode of Play It Again, the series which follows six celebrities on a musical journey as they learn an instrument in preparation for a big public performance.
Having fulfilled most of her ambitions, Diane admits that her main regret is never having learned how to play a musical instrument – and this regret is compounded by the fact that her family has a strong musical heritage.
Paul Roberts, Professor of Piano at London’s Guildhall of Music and Drama, has been given the task of turning Diane the politician into Diane the pianist.
Diane has a piano delivered to her London home in preparation for the countless hours of practice she needs to do. However, she is frantically busy and her piano practice is not at the top of her priority list.
In order to ensure that Diane dedicates some serious effort to her piano practice, Paul invites her to a residential course in France.
She also visits her Jamaican relatives to find out more about her family’s musical connections which includes great-uncle Adrian, who studied the violin in New York. However, she also learns that his life was fraught with hardship during his time there.
Play It Again follows Diane’s progress as she prepares to perform Chopin’s Prelude No. 4 in E minor at a charity concert in front of a paying audience at St Martin-In-The-Fields, in London’s Trafalgar Square.
