This week on Hey Paula, Paula’s hectic schedule kicks off in New York, where she is due to receive the Fashion Icon Award from the YMA scholarship fund. Things are not looking too good when, already running over an hour late, Paula glances at her speech for the first time and admits “this speech might be the biggest disaster of my life”. Arriving at the venue she has missed dinner and just makes it to the stage in time to collect her award, only to be handed her unfamiliar speech upside down with the pages in the wrong order. It looks like her earlier statement is becoming reality, until Paula turns to flattery to please her audience.

Paula confesses that she has suffered with insomnia for a few years now, sometimes getting less than an hour’s sleep each night and that it can take its toll. This is certainly the case in the days to follow as her behaviour deteriorates. On the verge of finalising her first perfume project Paula is meeting with the number one perfumer in the world, Firmenich, who are creating her perfume. As she dons a white coat and is escorted to the lab Paula likens herself to a mad scientist and her actions are not far off. When evening comes she describes feeling over stimulated, exhausted, giddy and hyper and her late night visits to Starbucks probably aren’t helping.

The America Idol press tour junket is Paula’s final task of the trip. She must give forty interviews which will be shown globally and viewed by millions. Her attention span takes a nose dive; -she can’t seem to pay attention to the questions and her answers are becoming increasingly erratic. Paula and her publicist Jeff insist maintaining her energy throughout forty interviews is tough and she is suffering from a lack of sleep and acting accordingly however it is not long before accusations of drink and drug abuse hit the press.
