Mel B started work on America’s Got Talent this week and it seems that already the former Spice Girl is causing controversy.
The mum of three was confirmed as a judge on the US show last week and she joins fellow newbie Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Howard Stern on the NBC series. Yesterday the first auditions with the new lineup were staged at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans and it’s been reported that Mel didn’t prove very popular with the waiting crowd.
New Orleans has always been big on it’s jazz bands and brass sections and TMZ has reported that the former X Factor Australia star won no favour with the audience when she criticised a band named Lagniappe.
Melanie Brown told the act that she isn’t a fan of their style of music but her comments caused an adverse reaction from fans sitting behind her and many started to boo, with some screaming ‘Go home,’ and ‘No respect’ at the British star.
Mel reportedly got upset and leaned into Howie who apparently wrapped his arms around her until it calmed down.
We don’t know why Mel found it so difficult to cope with though, after all she was often booed when she stood in on The X Factor UK last year and when she worked on the Australian version of the show she was often seen as unpopular and had a reputation for being the most critical mentor.
Mel stepped in as Sharon Osbourne’s replacement on “America’s Got Talent” this year, after Mrs O stepped down following a perceived slight against her son Jack.
It was claimed this morning that both women are now competing for a spot on the X Factor UK panel, and that Simon Cowell is trying to choose between them. If he chooses Mel he’ll have to either adapt the audition schedule to fit with her AGT commitments or hire some guest judges. Sharon on the other hand could hit the ground running right away.
