Olympics Closing Ceremony: Ed Sheeran sings Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ – Russell Brand does I am Walrus and then there’s Fatboy Slim! (VIDEO)
Ed Sheeran took to the stage tonight and performed an amazing cover version at the Olympics closing ceremony.
The A team hitmaker is one oif the brightest musical talents to have come from the British music industry in recent years so it was only right that he got a performance slot but we were really impressed by the fact that he decided not to showcase one of his own tunes but instead put a new spin on a really classic track.
This evening, as he sang for billions of viewers worldwide, as well as hundreds of thousands of onlookers in the Olympic Stadium the 21 year old star sang Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’.
The song was first released in 1974 and in 2004, was ranked #316 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Ed’s version was contemporary and yet respectful of the original, it was a great showcase of his skills and we loved the fact that he was joined on stage by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd and Mike Rotherford from Genesis.
Next out was Russell Brand, who emerged singing a creepy song from creepy Charlie And The Chocolate and later ‘I Am Walrus’ by The Beatles. It was a great effort from a man who is an actor and comedian and not really a singer and we thought he brought the right edge and quirkiness to the performance.
Fatboy Slim was next to the stage and stood behind the decks as he played ‘Right Here Right Now’ and ‘The Rockafeller Skank’. The single originally peaked at number six in the UK Singles Chart in June 1998. Itwas the second Fatboy Slim single (after “Praise You”) to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 72.

Generally the closing ceremony was a satisfactory affair. I do believe that some obvious mistakes were made in the choice of bands/artists who appeared.
GB has made a considerable contribution to the music scene over the last 50 plus years. One band that has made a world wide impact was Led Zeppelin….why was their music not represented?
I think that Ed did a great job on this cover, and by choosing a song that isn’t his it shows his natural talents.
