SO YOU THINK YOU’RE ROYAL – GEORGE IV

In another journey of discovery, historian Saul David helps a family uncover the truth about their alleged royal roots. With the help of an incredible journal, the life story of Hannah Harrison Lowe is revealed.

Believing herself to be the illegitimate daughter of George IV, Hannah’s diary is filled with details and dates that appear to corroborate her story. Now Saul and his team must scrutinise the document and establish whether the claims are true.

The investigation reveals a sorry tale of riches to rags and a lonely death in a Coventry workhouse. But a royal connection there may just be…

Enjoyed your programmes, I have a family story that I am related to Charles D’gaul the former leader of France. How would I start to reseach this. Are you having any further programmes.

  3. Richard Goble says:

Will you be doing any further programs regarding royal ancestors.

  4. Joseph Starmer says:

I am trying to research the Starmer name and believe we have Royal links and would like to know how to go about it. The Starmer name is a very old name belonging to the Anglo Saxon I believe. Could you help me please.

I know Lauren Holliday and she’s related to the people that went on the show. She recorded the show and showed us. the show and showed us. The show was great, but kind of sad, when they told them how Hannah died. So I guess I know someone who’s royal.

I haven’t seen the program as I live in Australia and was wondering if it is possible to purchase a copy. My husband’s family are from Tasmania and the story has been passed down through the family that his GGG grandfather is the illegitimate son of George IV and Maria Fitzherbert, possibly a sibling to Hannah Harrison Lowe. His name was John Smith (similar name to John Smythe, Maria’s grandfather) and it is reported that he was packed off to Australia from Newcastle-on-Tyne with wife Frances and son George, arriving in 1816. Legend has it that he received a gift of 20,000 pounds on the condition that he never returned to England. There was an article in our local newspaper recently about the story published with a picture of John Smith and George IV. The similarity is striking.

does any one know the name of the farm that Hannah Harrison Lowe stopped at in bulkington befor going to coventry to work as a ribbon maker ?

  9. Craig Rex says:

I’m a 6th descendant of George Rex of Knysna, South Africa, who was the founder and proprieter of the popular Knysna holiday resort and town on the east coast of South Africa.
George Rex used to cut timber from the Knysna forests and ship them to the UK and elsewhere and also exported and traded very successfully up and down the east coast and Indian Ocean.
George Rex was also reportedly the illegitimate son of King George lll and Hannah Lightfoot.
There are various books that have been publish around this legend.

It would be interesting to trace George Rex back to England and explore his background here in England before he left for South Africa in the late 1700’s.

Hi, i was very interested in my family tree as i related back to the Beaumont family, my grandmother bless her is a beaumont and her great grandfather x6 was Sir Richard Beaumont also known as black dick. He was related to Elizabeth 1st as they were first cousins. Is this the same Beaumonts as the French Royal family?

I wasn’t a big fan of the show, it set too much stock on legends and vague guesswork and not enough on documental evidence. Just to have a show-offy moment, it took many years of hard work to find my royal ancestors (King Edward I and his wife Queen Eleanor, if you’re interested) and the only way you can do it with any great certainty is to start with you and work backwards, hoping to strike gold (or the genealogy version of gold anyway). If you’re lucky enough you’ll probably find royal relatives. Go back far enough and the small seize of the human population indicates that pretty much everyone has to be related anyway.

enjoyed your programme but really would like to know the name of the grave yard that featured the grave of Christopher Spence. It was in North Yorkshire and I believe that this could be an ancestor of mine. I have so far traced our Christopher Spence back as far as 1760.

    Hope you can help

I have been watching repeats of “So you think you’re Royal” but have not yet managed to see all of the one on George IV. According to various stories, one of my 3rd great uncles, the Rev. George Alton (183-1887) of Heage, Derbyshire, a Methodist missionary in Canada, married Charlotte Amelia Alder, daughter of Robert Alder, also a Methodist missionary in Canada, and Catherine Margarita Tropolet. Robert Alder is reputed to be a son of King George IV and Maria Fitzherbert. After Canada, the Rev. George Alton was posted to Gibraltar, and finished his career in Swansea, where he became Chairman of the Swansea Methodist District. I should be pleased to hear from any relatives of the Rev. George Alton, many of whom had Hepworth, Tropolet or Alder as middle names, who may have similar stories about their descent.

I am a huge fan of this programme and have watched every episode 17 times. My favourite though is the far superior Grace Kelly episode which somehow seems to shine and has a vaguely winsome quality…perhaps its something to do with the camera work …infact I was wondering how I could get hold of a copy? xxx

  16. Emma says:

Hi does anyone know what the music of tonights episode was? The chorus sounds something like “sexy body”. It’s really been bothering me. Would really appreciate anyone’s input.

    Thank you.

    Emma.
