Strictly Come Dancing 2012: Cricketer Michael Vaughan to compete in this year’s show

It’s been revealed today that England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has become the first celebrity to be confirmed in the line-up of stars set to compete in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

And of course, the stars of sport have proven to be more than capable of turning their hands to a spot of ballroom dancing, given that Michael’s fellow ex-England cricketers Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash have both previously won the show.

TV Biz also reports that it was Robbie Savage’s participation in the last series of Strictly that made Michael consider taking part himself.

A source said to be close to the cricketing legend said, “Michael was chuffed that the BBC asked him to take part. But he was really uncertain about it…

“He had to think hard about having to dress up in pink and sequins and learn how to dance in front of millions of viewers.

“He asked a lot of his sporting mates if he should do it and Robbie immediately told him to say yes, as he had such a great time in last year’s show.”

As mentioned, though Michael is the first celeb to be officially confirmed as joining the show when it returns to the BBC in September, other stars such as Westlife’s Nicky Byrne have been on a list of those speculated to be signing up.

And of course, there’s to be at least one new pro-dancer in the new series, since it was recently reported that Katya Virshilas has been fired from the show.

Similarly, ballerina Darcey Bussell is set to take over the judging role vacated by the now Britain’s Got Talent judge, Alesha Dixon.
