The Passions of… Girls Aloud……Sarah Harding
In episode two of The Passions of…Girls Aloud, viewers watch as band member Sarah pursues her passion of polo which, after training both in the UK and in Argentina, will culminate in her taking part in a game, where she will play against some polo professionals. How will she fair?
Sarah begins her training in the UK in preparation for the final match. As she arrives at the ground she declares: “It’s posh isn’t it? Oh my God, just imagine galloping from one end of that pitch to the other. This is going to be wicked.”
As Sarah observes the players from the side of the pitch she says: “My biggest nightmare would obviously be if I came off. I’m relying on what skills I’ve already got to stay on the back of that horse.”
Sarah meets her polo instructor, Tarquin, to begin her training. She sits on a stationary wooden horse, practicing hitting the ball, and then moves on to a real horse whilst hitting the ball.
The would-be-polo player heads to bed that night with a copy of Jilly Cooper’s Polo.
Day two of training begins and Sarah has to train without the stick due to a sore wrist before she watches a professional match. She comments: “I wouldn’t want to play with that lot. Are you kidding me? I’d be dead!”
As Sarah starts her training with the polo team she says: “I don’t really do relaxing, I’m always very hyper, I was a very hyper child. I think the reason I probably earned a bit of a reputation as a wild child in London was because maybe I didn’t have all this out here, I was in the city so instead of venting it elsewhere like I can out here on the back of a horse, I was maybe going out in to London and getting steaming drunk.”
After spending the evening at the polo club, Sarah starts crying in the car on the way home. “They just made me feel like I was part of the family, really. It’s just nice to settle down into something that you really love and I miss it.”
Sarah leaves the UK and jets off to El Sosiego, Argentina, to continue her training. By day two in Argentina torrential rain threatens the polo playing.
Becoming emotional, Sarah says: “I wake up in the morning and I hear the horses neighing and there’s no traffic, there’s nothing, it’s really nice. I just think it was a real leveller for me when I was growing up and it was probably much like it is today - somewhere to get away.”
After her preparation in Argentina, Sarah returns to the UK for final training ahead of her challenge to play in a polo match.
She comments: “This is an experience that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”
Back at the polo club in England for more training, Sarah says: “I just don’t feel ready for this, I feel like when I was in Argentina that I’d advanced a bit more and now I’m back things have changed.Tomorrow I’ve got friends and family coming down and I don’t feel prepared. I just don’t want to make a fool of myself.”
Match day arrives and before the final challenge commences Sarah has these final few words to say: “I don’t want them [friends and family] to see me play badly. I want them to go, ‘Bloody hell, didn’t know she had it in her.’”
The final match starts…how will Sarah fair?
